I see some talk here about precision gear drives .. they are extremely tough but if you swinga prop with lots of pitch and couple that with a motor with lots of cam in it.. you will have alot of banging going on. This wont hurt the motor or the gear box but it will make you wonder if it is gonna come apart.. it wont.
The reason for that is that a V8 is not a source of constant power there are flat spots where no power is being transfered. That is why the radial engine was developed. The prop is a source of constant load and when the engine gets to a flat spot the prop bounces backwards and that is where the banging comes from. He uses spur cut gears, very tough but very rough at idle just as soon as you pick up the throttle the power lapses is not a problem and the banging stops.
So keep the cam on the mild side would be my suggestion or else get used to the banging.
