caladesi island

what is the best ramp to get to caladesi or is it to much trouble with an airboat.some friends of mine are going and i talked to the park ranger and he said there was not any airboat restrictions that he is aware of.has anyone went by airboat? any input would help.

My folks used to live in Dunedin over there. Calidesi was a frequent boating destination. I wouldnt even think of getting out there in an airboat though. Is shallow water, simi open and can kick up NASTY faster than you can get out of the way. Even for small boats it can be dangerous as hell.

I would ride with some one else in a kicker boat the frist trip and make my own decision. When I used to visit, the rumor was theres a boat a day goes down between the shore and Calidesi.

Good luck and be careful and stay safe.

Hey finally a topic I know a little about. Caladesi by airboat very doable. Have done it in the past, lots of people come over and talk to you. It is an awesome island, entry day fee is $4 and the docks are new floating aluminum. There is a snack bar with hot dogs, etc.. no alcohol allowed off the docks, although not enforced if you act accordingly. Short walk to the beach which is very nice, outdoor showers indoor bathroom/changing rooms. I would launch from sunset beach in tarpon springs. boat ramp is just sandy area, utilized by waverrunner/bayboats/airboats, head due west to three rooker islands, run shoreline on the inside (depending on weather) or outside south too caladesi. this is not the closest boat ramp but very nice ride. You are also close to anclote which I run the a/b up several bars to pick up refreshments etc.. and you can go fairly far east past us 19 on the a/b. restricitions are no a/b after 11pm. If you are just looking for a nice island to hang out and party, three rooker bars are nicer than caladesi for hanging out at. plus lots of things too look at if you catch the drift. The water from sunset beach to the icw is grass flat and shallow. crossing the icw be careful heavy boat traffic etc...Have a good time it is really nice. For reference sunset beach is the road south of howard park which is also a neat county park with a natural boat launch area which is not as good as sunset's. hope this helps.

Hard to beat local knowledge. Good reply badbilly.

Seems they have fiuxed it up some since the early 90s.

thanks for the responce that is maybe how i will launch.i tried to get my friends to go to anclote but they said it is too busy and i said not on the side i can go butt they have props in the water. :D

O yea they have defintily cleaned it up. boaters can stay overnight w/elec for $20. very fair when you compare to marinas. As far as the run from sunset to caladesi less than 30minutes. It is not a high traffic area light anclote because the ramp is natural and the water is shallow. You cant launch at real low tide waverunners etc...perfect for the airboater. Bondsman the run from WW to Caladesi is about 30 miles and awesome. you can stop at the hooters there for lunch on the water. it is really nice trip. I am guessing the park ranger you spoke to lives on the WW river? He is my neighbor, nice guy.

badbilly how long of a ride from howards i don't think my wife would do more than 15 min. on the boat.

Bondsman, the ride from sunset is slightly closer. if you got on it and took a straight path probably would be more like 20 minutes. it is mostly a protected run. if you want the closest place to launch you can beach load right off the dunedin causeway. never seen an airboat launched there but can't see why you couldn't. caladesi would be straight across from there about a 3 minute ride. hope this helps. also just fyi there is a ferry to the island from honeymoon i think they charge like 10 bucks a person.
