Can you paint hot-dipped galvanize?

My rigging is hot dipped galvanized. Can it be painted and what type of prep does it need? Will Ospho help or hurt? ANY help would be appreciated.

Just etch it with vineager or anti freeze! Let it sit for about a hour been told more than once ! Never had a chance to try it !

Right on, Fat. White vineger. It kind of pickles the the zinc and you're good to go. Make sure it's completely dry before you paint though.

FB's right on with the vinegar. Then you can get "cold galvanizing" in a "rattle can". Use it on A/C equipment all the time in saltwater atmospheres and it works.

Unless you have rust coming thrugh the galv. be carefull
with the ospho, it will break down the zink.a good pressure
washing after the vinager rubdown, let it completely dry
good primer, and good paint .that epoxy two part by
rustoleum is tough stuff, we paint our rock bins and hoppers
with it and they take a beating.

Thanks,I was looking on the rustolem web site and I think I found the paint K-mac was talking about and I believe it does have a hardner. Now if I can find a place to buy it.

Thanks. I ordered a gallon of primer and a gallon of black paint(no

quarts) from Grainger late this afternoon.They said it would be here

from Jax tomorrow.I can't believe you can get anything shipped to Levy

County next day. I should have plenty left, so if anyone needs anything

painted black...

Like any epoxy, keep an eye on the pot life once you mix it.
Grainger is a great supplyer not always the best price, but
on Industrial items, and hard to find things they're great
always found their people very helpful also.

Yea my cage was, I was told just clean and use self etching epoxy primers so far it been fine. primer is about $100 per gallon.
