Some of the older ones had leather seals on
the pump piston, and if there is no seal around
the pump shaft the fuel in the pump cylinder
will evaporate in just a day or two and the
leather dries out and sometimes crumbles.
I replaced the piston seal on mine quite a few
times, and had to clean leather crap out of
the squirter. Always wondered if you could get
a neopream cup seal for that, but back then
nickles and dimes went into the gas tank
and I just cut a new seal out of an old belt
or pair of boots. Of course I always ran pump
gas ( Hi Test when I had an extra nickle or two)
and never had problems if I ran it regularly.
This may not be it at all, just a thought.
