im running a zz4 350 pushing out around 400 hp. fast burning heads and roller cams. i talked tosome peole about what size holley to go with, some say 650 others say 750. i was running a 750 double pumper but want to know what wouldbe the best. any comment i would appreciate it

For a ZZ4 in my opinion the best carb is a Holley 700CFM DP pn #4778 the 700 was designed for small inch motors to enhance throttle response they also utilize a 50cc accelerator pump stock which is a must on an air boat with a wide prop. I know everybody loves the BG which is now Demon they are great at marketing but I prefer the Holley 80% of all Demons I have ever seen have a major throttle shaft tolerance problem they wobble from the factory. I have installed a ton of 700cfm's Holley's on SBC350'S all you need to change is the primary squirter install a .037 squirted and your dead on the money for a ZZ4 motor!
this was posted by waterthunder on another thread.

Them 700's work killer right out of the box just change the squirter. They are all the carb you need for 360 inches and under turning 6,000 RPM or less with a conventional SBC. They have killer response and the 50cc secondary pump!

Hey! any recommendations for my 489? I'll need to be on the lookout for a good deal for the right stuff! 8)

Run a Holley 830CFM annular JEG'S pn#510-0-9381 they work killer on the 454 to 502 CUI BBC's. If it's really hopped up with a gearbox go to the 850CFM annular Holley!

 2.68/1  Actually I was wondering if one of your engines was involved with this transaction. The guy said the original owner went to one of those Aluminum Car engines, about 9 months ago. 8)

Even with the 400 hp i have the 700 will work? I was afraid that i would have to change all the jets and do alot of work to get it right. I have rebuilt this motor twice due to just plain bad luck.Once puncturing a hole in the radiator out in the middle of no where and it ran hot. i Have put alot of money in it and want to make sure that i don't do anything stupid to make things worse. I have talked to some racing people and they tell me that a carburetor right out of the box will not work. I appreciate your response.

Panther I'm sure Thunder definitely know what he is doing, So I would take is advice or 750 holley dp would work also my dad has a ZZ4 with a roller rockers and hot cam which brings it close to 400hp and he runs a 750 holley dp. The key is to check your spark plugs and make sure that they are not turning to white(lean) or too black(rich).

A 750cfm will work fine if you didn't have a carb I would recommend the 700 or a 750 annular. The 700 has a better accelerator pump and linkage for airboat use. But a 750DP is also a good carb you will just have to spend some time to get rid of the flat spot between 800RPM to 2,000RPM.

Well i installed a Holley 700 and have to say it is running well. The only problem I am having now is the initial throttle response. When it gets over 1000 rpms it runs fine but on idle it is running around 600 rpm and when i floor it, it lags. if i ease into it then its fine. Any suggestions?

somebody on here will Know for sure what the problem is. I would lean towards the accelerator squirters myself or the incorrect power valve in it but for heavens sake don't take my advice. Just hangout a bit and one of the experts will chime in.

Well i went and changed the primary squirter to .037 and the initial response is better. At around 1500 rpm it still bogs but this time it backfired. Could it be from to big of a squirter i went from a .028 to a .037. The bad thing is being from Texas there is hard to find someone to work on it unless i go to Orange, Texas but that is about 3 hours away.
If there is anyone in the area that could help or have ony suggestions i would appreciate it. I was looking for to next weekend at Port O' Conner duck hunting.

Water Thunder,
Is this the carb, and squirter that you suggested for a ZZ4 engine? (dual plane intake)

I don’t know squat about carburetors, what else would I need for installation?
I also have a mechanical fuel pump that I bought when I ordered the engine from classic.
It has worked OK with the #1406 Edelbrock carburetor that I have on there right now.
Will that be enough for the Holley?
What kind of adjustments are required after it is installed?
Do I need different gaskets than the ones that come with it?
Does anyone have pics that they could e-mail me of their installed carb setup?
I think I can get through this with a little help (or a lot of help)
No one wants to, or is able to work on Airboats up here.

Do you Northern US guys use chokes or run around like all the Florida guys? Or that's what it seems! Be pretty tough up here but that number Waterthunder mentioned without choke, I'm sure I can add the choke. Stuff to rob! Going too high on ebay and most arn't anular. But some look reel nice! 8) Jegg's price seems pretty good!

What's the diff 830-850? Throttle bore size and the 50cc pump? $115.00 for 20 cfm and a 50cc pump. I have pumps and linkage kicking around if I wanted one or two! 8)

I'm thinking when the carb gets that big, smaller butterfly size cant but help throttle response. Just sure I'm going to have to run a choke

Most do not have a choke. Just a stick for the gas pedal.
I have an electric choke on mine. Not sure it's a good idea.

I need some help also I have a holly 4 barrell that hesitates from idle when you punch it any advice on where to start

I found a source: stores.ebay.com/Bolduc-Performance-Technologies

Carbs and parts. I kinda wanted new throttle blades for my 850 DP and I found them. I pulled the old ones out and cleaned them up and they would have worked but new ones were like $8.00.

I will run manuual choke because less chance of poping back through the carb cold start or operation, you don't need to have the fast idle screw turned up much. Probably find another primary metering block to do 4 corner idle too. Not crazy about the electric chokes.

roberti53, Easy to pull that choke and choke plate off if you dont want it! Or get some fast idle out of it! Vacuum port you will have to plug, piece of appropriate sized lead shot and some epoxy glue for good measure and a screwdriver. Quite often the plate screws are punched or hammered on the thread end so filing, sanding disk or just working the screws out and back in with a penetrant is enough to get out. Seen guys strip out the screw heads though.

Rest of you guys with flat spot will have to determine if it is too lean (most likeley). After fuel pressure, flow, quality and level checks you can begin.
If you have a vacuum secondary it could be secondarys opening to fast, Double pumper start with accelerator pump. With a manual choke you can actually enrich to help troubleshoot.
