CDI Unit on an o-235 lycoming

i have to rebuild both mags and had come across CDI unit upgrades from lightspeed engineering. it sounds like a cool idea and might be considering checking into it. what are ya'lls thoughts on CDI units on an aircraft engine? Has anybody done it, if so let me know.

I was checking out that system too. It has the advance curves built in and a hot spark for a longer duration. plus your not turning two mags. Run the auto motive plug conversion. sound like a sweet setup. e mag is cool to but they have not put there 6 cyl system out yet but for the 4 it is a plug and play setup.

Somewhere (Spruce maby?) I saw the Automotive sparkplug conversion bushings, seems like a set of four was ~$55.
Anyone know of any resion not to convert? Autolite 386's are common and relativly inexpensive, however the ability to use a 14mm plug opens up a whole diffrent world in terms of composition, electrodes, heat ranges, tip projection,...

If you go with the after market ignition. You will not see the full advantage of the hotter spark b/c the ac plugs are so cold and won't hold up to the big spark. That is what i was told.

I have the Lightspeed igniton on a IO-540 built by Barrett Performance. It's on a very small, VERY fast 2 seat experimental plane. The INSTANT I started the engine with the electronic ignition, I could feel the difference. The engine just felt " smoother". It seems to run a bit cooler as well. I'm sold on it.

The first A/C motor I converted to an electronic ignition around 10 years ago picked up around 250rpm at idle with the same exact timing that pretty much sums it it up! Mags do not have enough dwell or voltage at low RPM's! Im installing electronic fuel injection and ignition on my wifes O-540! They start so much better and idle way smoother then a mag set up!
