mag installation on a PE90
#1 cylinder at TDC
rotate CCW to ~28 degrees before TDC
Clock the timing gear to mesh with the coupling, with the "timing mark" inside set center (right where the points break contact)
Lock down & go....right?

Now here's where I'm a little unsure: As you slowly pull the prop past the 28 deg. point, on past TDC, and to ~25 degrees after TDC the impulse "clicks".
Is this also OK?

Is it OK to start the engine without a prop? (It's got a flexplate & hub attached, and while I don't think so, I've been wrong more than once.) :oops:
 
No, you need a prop. Don't run the engine without one. I sure don't understand how you are trying to time the engine. After the impulse clicks did you turn the prop back to just a little before your 28 degree timing? Did you take the lash out and did the timing buzz box sound just at the 28 degree mark? Do you have a timing buzz box?

Thought so.
I set #1 at TDC, then rotated the the flywheel CLOCKWISE to 28 degrees before TDC (this is where the point should open, causing the mag to spark) The mag WAS set in this way and tightened down.
Now as I slowly rotate the flywheel thru bringing the flywheel back around to where it should be firing (28 deg BTDC) no impulse "click", past TDC ; no click, now by the time the flywheel has gone about the same distance past TDC that it's set before (~25 degrees) it "clicks".
This is making me thing that I'm 60 degrees out.
Twice I've spoken to Speedwheelie, and was quite certain I followed the proper instrictions, and I've had the mag on and off a couple times since buying the boat including installing this rebuilt that I bought from Tom and never had any trouble before....just un-sure of my work, and it'll be very dangerious running the engine inside the garage. (no it's not that easy to pull it outside)

Backing it up would be CLOCKWISE right?
If so, that's where I'm at. (28 degrees +/- a couple degrees)

The inpulse coupling retards the timing of the mag for starting purposes. Itr clicks AFTER TDC. If the mag fires before TDC the motor can kick back damaging your starter or ring gear. Different motors have a different degree of lag. There are 25 degree 35 degree 45 degree and others. If you turn the mag and look at the gear through the opening on the side you should notice the gear will turn until the coupling catches and the gear will stop while the coupling spring loads and then it will snap after TDC. Above around 350 RPM the centrifugal weights on the coupling arm keep the arms from catching the strike pins allowing the mag to fire at the 28 degree mark you set it to fire at

Just a heads up:
The engine started right up and ran fantastic! It's never been as smooth & quiet a it is now.

There weren't any comments on the Ford flexplate that went on this engine, but I will say that it's very quiet when starting, I think it's a good choice. :D

Now to do something about the rudders....got a used set?
