i just got a deal on a 12 foot boat. its complete minus the engine. i'm thinking about using a 4.3 v6 just to make a froggin boat. my question is will a stock vortec v6 push this little boat? if not what kind of changes can i expect to do to the engine? by the way it'll be direct drive to keep cost down right now. any info would be great.....thanks, david

12 foot is a little big for that motor DD.

4.3L is only 262 cubic inches.

However, performance shouldn't be too much of a factor on a frog boat.

Put a 66lxl26 on it and go have fun

I have a friend that runs a 2.8 chevy v6 on a 11 1/2 ft. boat with a 4 blade warp and it runs pretty good. I currently run a 250 chevy inline 6 swinging a 66x34 on my boat, an 11ft. west palm style hull and it will get me where i need to go. A 4.3 can push a boat ok, keep everything as light as possible. My 250 can run dry as long as I hold it wide open, if I stop then it takes a bit of shaking to get going again, but the boat has served me well for 15 years now. It also makes an awesome frogging boat, it will idle around all night on a couple gal. of fuel.

i'm with you, Larry ..... it ain't all about horsepower. 15 years of service? I'll take that anytime. Good post ...

You're right, it's not all about horsepower.

I've had the same trolling motor since I was 7

It will push my little rowboat anywhere in the lake....Just real slow and not in the grass where the frogs are

i'm not really looking to run the hill all day long but be able to fish and also get up in the grass and be able to get back out also. weight will be kept down, no more than 2 average sized people. i got a heck of a deal on this boat so that's why i'm trying to keep cost down.

A vortec V/6 is a superior V/6 the heads are an excellent casting. I have built several 4.3 Vortec’s ranging from 300HP to 400HP. They run great and have a roller cam, great heads and many parts are available for them plus they’re cheap. They respond well to upgrades also. If you need any help or suggestions let me know I really enjoyed building them motors. Nothing like whipping up on an aircraft running a little ole V/6. If your on a budget but have a little money to spend put the Edelbrock performer on it with a set of 1.6 roller rockers that will give you the most bang for the buck. They make good torque for such a light small package.

what would you recommend to be be a decent direct drive boat? any suggestions on what prop (remember, this is a budget boat for now), what cfm carb do you suggest?

I just noticed in the new Airboat World that Airboat Pro's is selling a 13 by 8 boat with a direct drive 4.3 v6. They have it rated at 150hp as a direct drive. Maybe you could give them a call to see how that motor pushes that boat around. I'm sure that a v6 would be fine for what your wanting to do, and if it's not you could use it to figure out just what you do need.
