Citrus County firefighters are watching a still-smoldering wildfire that broke out Wednesday night.

The fire started east of Farris Grove in a swamp along Duval Island Road in Floral City. It burned about 100 acres.

The Florida Division of Forestry used a helicopter Thursday afternoon to dump water on the fire and intentionally torched a few areas as a precaution.

Don Ruths, a Division of Forestry spokesman, said firefighters will need to watch the fire for days.

"They'll be checking this off and on for, I would say, a good week," Ruths said.

Investigators said the wildfire was sparked by an unauthorized burn and would have spread more if not for the terrain. A canal and several airboat trails acted as natural fire breaks that kept the fire from spreading.

Ruths said homes in the area are out of danger for now.
