INVERNESS - Airboat drivers on local waterways after 11 p.m. can face fines from the county, but not criminal charges.

The County Commission voted 4-1 to approve a new airboat curfew ordinance Tuesday. Commissioner Vicki Phillips was the lone dissenter, arguing that misdemeanor penalties would deter boaters from breaking the rules.

An ordinance that has been...

Rick,

Good catch as usual :salute:

This is the same thing that Osceola will probably do....

At least it's not the jail time as first suggested!

I would of like to see a 12pm to 6am but that would mean the people that come in at 11:30 would now push it back to 12:30. Well it's better that 6-6

We need more politicians like the gentleman in the Citrus County article. I think that a lot of us built or bought our airboats primarily as a hunting tool to access hunting grounds, be it for duck, deer, turkey, etc. You can bet that other counties are paying attention to what Osceola does! I think we should push for a provision during hunting seasons (say 5 AM). Six AM does not give us enough time to get to our stands or blinds. And no curfew for those in posession of gator tags. Even if we had to idle within a certain distance of residental areas, would be better than nothing. Any thoughts? Really growing tired of the yanks :x

NightRider,
As one who is on the committee working with Osceola County, I can tell you as of Wednesday, your wishes are in the proposal. I am also the President of Citrus County Airboat Alliance along with being President of Florida Airboat Association. FAA is doing all it can do to fight off unjust regulation but it all comes down to the fact that if we want to continue airboating we MUST quiet down our airboats AND be courteous and respectful of others.

Those who continue to be loud and obnoxious, often referred to as outlaws, are the ones who are ruining it for the rest of us.

If airboats were as quiet as other vessels, then we would not be singled out and regulated against.

Swamp, much as I hate to say it, it really is coming down to self enforcement in some cases.
In my opinion we can no longer afford to wait for the FWC to enforce a sound standard. We are going to have to step up.

Keep this in mind folks. If /when airboats are banned from some areas, Enforcement will still be running theirs because they are already exempted from every current and pending regulation I've read.

We need some 'sound' solutions to this. Pun intended.

Swampjet, glad to here about the possible hunting provisions. I do think it is an important issue to consider. Unfortunately, the folks trying to "regulate" airboats, are probably of the tree hugging variety who would look at that point as a double bonus. BTW, just yesterday on a jobsite in an upscale community on the barrier island, a police officer came up and asked me for my license and registration. When I asked him what the problem was, he said I had a taillight out (center light, under the boat), than proceeded to ask me why I had an airboat "over here", and informed me that they don't see those things around here. WTF? No infraction, just plain old harassment. Anyway, I agree with you 100% on the self enforcement issue. Also, would like to say thank you to yourself and others who donate their time for our rights, we need more like ya.

Damn yank's didn't know about the airboats when they moved here or what. They move here to get away from the city and then try to turn it into what they just left!! :x
