Commission set to begin review of airboat noise

People whose peace and quiet are disrupted by airboats pleaded with the Alachua County Commission on Tuesday for greater restrictions on the watercraft while enthusiasts said that would take away their rights to a livelihood and to their fun. . .

That lake has just become a private lake for the Sheriff and everybody who lives on it. We need to schedule a monthly ride there shortly before we can’t ride there anymore. What was the conclusion of the meeting more meetings or did they come up with some new regulations? I think the time has come for all air boaters in all counties to start a club with dues like the NRA so we can fund some bad ass lawyer’s to represent air boaters and defeat these people who move onto the water and try to make the water their own private area. I can’t believe the airboat manufactures are not already out there working together. The airboat owners and manufactures had better start soon. Especially the manufactures since it’s your lively hood. There is a great group gaining power that has really been doing some good they even have backed politicians that represent boaters and have been legally fighting this type of crap their called Citizens for Florida’s Waterways they only charge $25 for membership and you get a news letter that informs you of proposed boating restrictions and who is pushing against or for our boating rights. They have several sponsors and are doing a great job the number is 321-722-4137. They have actually been getting some of our boating rights back on the intercostals. Hell I know allot of air boaters would contribute to a rights protection program. Come on guy’s let’s start something.

Lets get as club together.CCAA did a great job in citrus and we can to, we have a lot of people who ride. I was at GTO a few months ago and they said they wanted to start a club for this area. Lets What can I do to help?.

Let's not do just one (area) we need one club for the whole state then we will have enough power and money to win these battles. All airboaters and manufactures need to join as one group. I will talk to some manufactures but we need a widely respected and known airboater to head up this group. I would think Sensenich, Powershif, WhirlWind, DiamondBack, Franklin, Hoffman, GTO, Classic, Alumitech would all be interested in supporting the preservation of airboating. The Citizens For Florida Waterways also brings allot of environmental info to offset the B.S. issues that are always used aginst boaters on the intercoastal. We don’t even have a joined effort or a lawyer or any environmental fact’s. Were doing well but imagine how much better and more influential we will get when in each county airboaters will know which commissioner will stand for the rights of airboaters and vote accordingly. We got a commissioner put on the board that is for boaters on the intercostal and not the new resident’s that push all these no wake and Manatee zones.

That what the Florida Airboat Association does. They represent all the clubs in the state. They took the fight in Citrus County to the commisioners. They were there at the hearings. Contact them.

Well I went to their site and they didnt mention anything and there was no information on what they do and no way to join. I sure hope ya'll dont think you won anything in citrus county yet it is just the first round. The boys I talked to up there didnt like the curfew nd a couple of them had to spend the night sittin on their boats waitin till it was time to run them again just to get home. You see the easiest way to stop airboat noise at night is to pass a curfew and enforce it. Here in manatee county it is 6pm to 8 am no airboats allowed to run. The fine in citrus is 500.00 and you can lose your boat that gets my attention. Now if sumter and hernando adopt a similar curfew the river will get quiet. I was up there and there were car motor and aircraft runnin only flex pipes and they were locals who run there at night and when it is curfew time they run the river because it is shared with other counties that dont have a curfew.. YET.

Ya'll better wake up and put mufflers on the boats and change your drivin habits or you aint gonna drive anymore the handwriting is on the wall you can get mad if you want to but you will lose because if the noise ordinance doesnt get you to change they will simply pass curfews and no wake zones. curfews are easy to enforce they just wait at the boat ramp for you. no wake zones are just as easy to enforce they dont need sound meters or measured distances just a wake observed and your done.

airboating is not a right it is a privlige just like driving a car is not a right.

cntry,

I agree. Look at the classifieds, do you see any mufflers? How many turbo warp drives?

The situation is bad but not bad enough to get people off of their wallets.

YET

Yall , Need to listen to these few people . I dont remember who said this but .A pig roast and beer will bring 1000 people togather . tryins to save the our real rites will bring 100 togather .Just dont understand ,we are caring bunch of people that which makes this simple .Our common foes get togather and plan how to hurt us .And the few of us is making this so easy for them .I am a foolish sob! But i can see what coming !Palormintrely Porcesure is not one of our greatest assets. Spelling not one of mine :D

It would help if we had a good solution to the problem that doesn't cost an arm and a leg nor resticts the use of an airboat.Alot of people are trying. the airboaters code of ethics would work if 100% followed them but just 1% could mess things up. theres been alot of time and money spent on both sides of the fence and I for one want to continue with the enjoyment of airboating and the freedom to ride.

Hello, new guy to the site..........correct me if I am wrong, but I read the FWC report on mufflers vs non mufflers. The tests performed do not show the advantage of installing mufflers except at low low rpm? I just got into a bigger car engine boat coming out of an aircraft boat, and I plan on adding mufflers, but is there a benefit to the noise?
Glad we don't run into the noise problems like some of you guys do.....it must suck! Glad to help out where I can.

Rich I believe that mufflers help engines according to all the really smart guys. You get more torque I am not sure on that but at the rpms we run I can find plenty of reports which show an improvement over straight exhaust. I am trying a setup on mine that consists of my headers into solid pipes into a true x-pipe then into mufflers with turn downs aimed at the center bottom of my hull so it will mix with my prop wash to further break up the engine noise. I hope it works and I will keep track of what it costs. But I am sure if we continue to make noise we will be constantly getting areas placed off limits to run in. I also plan on some kind of prop sheild to try and limit that noise also. All I can say is I am tryin to quiet it down.

Hi Rich, and welcome to Southern Airboat,

I think that many props will "drown out" the exhaust at high rpm. If we can quiet the props then a V8 with straight pipes is going to be a factor, don't you agree?

Jim

I am all for a quieter boat........I hate ringing ears. I just don't want to spend 500 bucks ona new exhaust system then a new method comes out etc. I was really hoping for some new revolutionary setup from the FWC report, but all I saw was the normal stuff that has been around forever. My 383 engine gets loud when I get it spinning and I wish a prop Mfg would get their act together and make us some quiet props.....it may not be possible who knows? In the meantime I will keep looking for a system that suits my needs. If anyone has good suggestions I am all for it.

the turbo warp drive is marketed by Classic I believe. They are supposed to be quiet with good push.

They can be built with more that two layers for big HP. The numbers I have seen are 50 hp per blade. I have not seen it personally.

I would like to see one of these tested by the FWC with a quiet exhaust.

Jim

I might be wrong, but I don't think you can get an individual membership in FAA, it is an umbrella for a group of clubs, and then each club sends a representative to the meetings. Bobby and Patti at Powershift are very active in several organizations they can offer a lot of information. If you don't have a local airboat club, start one. Even if it is only one or two people, get incorporated, write some letters, attend some meetings. The FWC and water mgmt both have web sites advising of up coming meetings. The biggest problem we have, myself included, is somebody else will do it, or I don't have enough time, or its not in my area. We have to get a common voice, there are other organizations besides FAA, ECC, NRA, Florida Sportsman, etc. which might be a better route, because most airboaters are just airboaters, we are hunters, fisherman, giggers, etc. We recently won a battle in Broward to protect the camps in the everglades thanks to the efforts of a few good guys and a couple of money men, but it is probably only temporary. But, at least for now, the camps are safe. Just took somebody getting off their butt and making some calls and going to some meetings. Airboat world has a list of clubs, ours meets in Davie the 4th Wednesday of each month except Nov & Dec, you guys are welcome to stop by and BS about airboats with us and try to make a difference, even if it only a little difference. Let me know if any body needs the info for our meeting or check out the site at http://www.browardairboatclub.com/index.htm
