cont. o470 problem?

I was running my boat yesterday and when I had the motor (cont. o470) around 2300-2500 rpm it backfired once and lost significant power but quickly retuerned to normal running. About 5 minutes later the same thing happened. The motor has always ran great without any problems at all. It does have 334 hours since the last rebuild though. Any ideas on what could have caused this? I'm not sure if it is a fuel issue or if it's the plugs or something more serious. Thanks in advance.

Mine did the same thing at about 120 hrs. Check the compression on all cylinders. I would have thought mine was a fuel problem;however, I had actually lost two valve seats . I ran about 15 miles and loaded up. I would have never believed I was running on 4 cyls. Hope your problelm isn't as serious as mine was.

I am not an expert with any of the engines and have never ran Cont.. But I was told to check things out on Lycomings if you got a backfire. I would at least do a compression check, shouldn't take 30 minutes to do and if you lost a valve seat it should show. Pre-detonation can wreck a lycoming, and I am guessing the same with the Cont., so I would at least check things out.

Well, pulled and cleaned all my plugs and cleaned them and fired the motor up and she ran wonderful and then there was a pop and a light blue puff of smoke came from my carb. I shut her down and noticed a steady drip of fuel coming out of the carb. where the throttle linkage pin goes in. The pin itself seems loose and if I try to restart the motor I have to hold the throttle down and the motor runs horrible. I think I'm getting air in through around the pin and fuel is getting out. Now what?!

Sounds like you might have dropped a valce. Strongly suggset you do the compression check before you run it any more. Can go from bad to tragic pretty quick.

Been there, done that, got the $500.00 T shirt.
