Custom oil cooler

Is anyone familiar with this boat? I saw it at the Lakeland car auction, and it is advertised in the trader. The add says it belonged to Wayne Cone.

It looks like he used the engine stand as an oil cooler. The lines thread into the stand tubing. I was wondering if any of you know how well that worked.

A friend of mine is running the same setup on his full deck with a stock 470 gpu motor. He says that his oil temps never get above 195 even with running hard. I dont know how this would work with a higher output motor that makes a lot more heat, but I was thinking about doing something similar on the 520 I'm building, using the stand as the oil lines to the cooler.

YES, that was the boat that belonged to the LATE Wayne Cone. He passed away just about a year ago. His memorial was a featured article in airboat world magazine. I had the pleasure of knowing him, he was one of the good ones. I just stopped by his old camp in the Glades today while I was out. He was an excellent welder and made many custom pieces for his boats. Also check out the custom oil tank. The entire engine stand, cage, rigging, frog chute, and grass rake are aluminum. That is the sister boat to the one he drove to become the 1st man to make it from Ft.Lauderdale to BIMINI in an airboat. I posted a pic of that boat in the airboat4fun members gallery[/i]

AB4Fun,

I remember this article in ABW, (might even still have the issue around here somewhere).

How far and how long did this trip take?

Me and Bruce have talked about building a rad. cage for the cm. The aluminum cages would be a good culprit. Hollow joints and maybe a couple of extra braces in the rudder area for extra cooling. Use some of those in line electric water pumps the drag racers use. In a close system i think it could be pumped efficiently ?? May not want to touch it or knock it around but to get the rad. out of the way for cleaner air has to be worth it.

Dan,

That would be a cool idea! I think maybe WT's old boat used something like this? I know he had a radiator about the size of an oil cooler with an electric water pump. Could always put a "by-pass" loop in the system in case of rigging failure/breaks etc...

Man, to be able to eliminate the weight of a radiator and "clogging" of bugs inherit with a radiator would be great! :thumbright:

I'm sure i'm not the first to think of it. I would like to try it. i'm sure there would be some bugs to work out! A bypass is a good idea. I didn't think a bout that. Get some good minds together and you have a think tank. Come up with some cool stuff .
