Daughter's Birthday Hunt

Florida Cracker

Posted this on another site, thought you might enjoy it also.

My youngest daughter's 13th birthday is this friday. As part of her birthday she wanted to go duck hunting with me. I first took her out when she was three and she has enjoyed it ever since. It had been some time since she actually made it to the blind though. Two trips ago (three years this week) as we headed to Lake Port for an evening hunt, we were rear ended just west of Buckhead Ridge. Our boat was destroyed, (no one injured). The next two years basically huntless. Well this year was going to be the year, new airboat and mud motor for gheenoe. Not so much!!!! Tried to get her out with boys on opening of second phase, got into the marsh and it was packed, did not set up (Cracker Barrel for breakfast ). So anyway, yesterday she took a mental health day from school and we went to Lake Port for an evening hunt. I was not very hopeful as we didn't move many birds on the way in. But we did have a few opportunities and I managed to get a drake ringer. Our best opportunity came as I was preparing to take her picture (hopefully attached). A nice flight came right over us less than 20 feet above us, oh well - great picture!!. At the conclusion of the hunt she gave a big hug and said it was the best birthday ever.

Side note - she shares the same birthday as my father, boy I miss him. Whenever you can, spend time with your loved ones making memories. The best times I ever had with him was when we hunted and fished together. Rarely does an outing occur now when he doesn't come to mind, especially when I'm with my kids. (I apologize if this was too sappy a thread, but it's how I feel)

Don't know how to post pics to thread, but I placed them in my pictures on the site.

Great Job raising your kid. Theres nothing better than spending time with your Family, enjoying the natural wonders of Florida.

Got to be careful though.

It seems to me when you take Ladies out Fishing, and Hunting, they always wind up catching the most fish, or outgunning all the guy's.

Happens all the time.

Heres a picture of my son and I enjoying the woods together.
I sure enjoyed the day with him. Told him so.

Great Post, reading it really hit home and put a lump in my throat. there is nothing that compares to quality time with the family on the boat and in the woods. the time you spend with them makes memories that last a lifetime. I took for granted the time spent fishing with my dad when I was a kid, now that I have one of my own I know just how precious it really is. You only get one chance to raise them, enjoy the good times. Keep it up and thanks for sharing with us.

You never need to apoligize for sounding sappy when it comes to your KIDS. Mine made my whole life a while back when she came up out of the blue with how lucky she was to have me for a dad I asked her how she figured and she said because she could shoot, fish, scallop, drive a airboat or a flats boat and she had a chance to do things her friends only might dream of. So the morale of the story is that KIDS do pay attention despite what we may think and they do appreciate things done with them even if it takes a little time for them to say so. I always figured mine thought I was the grouchiest person in the world and never could figure out why every summer my boats were never big enough for all her friends who wanted to go on trips that is why I have a 21' flats boat trying to get enough of them on there safely. I figured it out once that the scallops cost about 5 bucks a pound in publix and I spend about 500 bucks a pound for them when we go out and dive em up. However it seems they actually were priceless in the overall scope of things in life. You just can't put a value on those kinda times.

ALWAYS TAKE TIME FOR FAMILY ESPECIALLY KIDS they are what you make them they reflect what they see and do so pay attention cause they are.

Amen country!!! :D I try to take my kids along as much as possible. My daughter an wife love to frog hunt . They both went on a gator hunt with me this year also. It helps also because kids have eyes like hawks. They often see the frogs before I do!!! :) she has spotted some fence posts for me to. I like having some good eyes in the boat.

To all of y'all that have posted on this subject so far ..... Thank you. I've thoroughly enjoyed it.

After all of us are gone, the single most important thing that we'll have left behind us is our babies. They're the 'US' that goes on into the next century. The wealthiest people I know are the ones who have children who look after them when they get too old and infirm to really look after themselves. The big houses, big cars, and all that other stuff don't even begin to compare with a hug and an 'I love you' when you get too old to remember what you had for breakfast.

Cowboy, thanks for placing the picture. She's the youngest of 4. They are all great kids. I'm very fortunate to have a lot of time to spend with them. Three of them enjoy the outdoors, one not so much. But with her we do other things. Love the picture with your son.

my kids go everyplace i go. if thay can't go that means i can't 99% of the time. my little girl loves to frog hunt and my son loves to just ride the boat. i'm lucky i still have my dad and he is in good health he spends almost every weekend with my brother and i plus the 3 grand kids mom and my wife. we are all very tight with one and other.

when i shot my leg dad fixed my boat trailer so i could get in and out of the boat. just so we could go boatin together. I LOVE MY CLAN!!!!!!!!

UncleBubba, you are a very wealthy man ....... . You have, heaped up and running over, everything that matters in life.

Florida Cracker - Thanks for starting a great thread.

If it's alright with you, we'll send your daughter a Southern Airboat T-shirt on be-half of all the members here. PM a size and it'll be in the mail.

Thanks again,
Rick

wow what a thread. Reminds me the first time my oldest boy at about 8 tried the 20 gauge. I think I had only 3" shells. My 13 year old daughter isn't into duck hunting but has been exposed. She is pretty good at running the boat. The gocart I built they know how to 4 wheel drift it, Cool! this summer we did an east coast tour of the Maritimes! rented a car, tented and had a blast! I guess down to earth pretty much covers it!

Taint much I kin say dat ain't already bin said. So I'll just say AMEN, DITTO, spoken like a true bunch of great folks. Keep up the great jobs with the memories, cause its whats left when the ducks don't fly, the fish don't bite, or the dogs don't jump a track, you still go home a winner and a hero. Later, Cajun, and missing his old man too since 1973.
