direct drives

i am about to purchase an airboat with a 350 direct drive motor is there anyway i can make it run on land and is that an ok set up it is going to be my first boat.

Well
What kind of hull, how long is the hull?
Are you looking to run with just yourself?

Need more info

I know you were faron, I thought it was funny too when I read it. Did you ever ask your dad about Bill D. from when he lived in melbourne?

I have a 350 DD with a wide blade on it and I can run ground with 2 and even 3 people depending on the ground. I know Red has a stroker engine, but mine is just a regular 350. The boat is 12 and 1/2 foot by 7 foot. Works good for my first boat.

Frog spit will always help

Get a 72" carbon fiber wide blade prop like the Sensenich Q series. That is what I run on my 383 boat. I do not have frog spit/slick bottom, but I can still go most anywhere I need to go.

Aove that, learn how to drive, WHERE to drive, and always park downhill. You'll be fine. 8)

I ran a DD for many years with a small block and the best way to run dry ground is to put a prop on it that you can only spin to 2500rpm and add a 200hp NOS kit. When you get stuck you can hit the goofy gas any you will go. The other thing that helps is a soap system.

PS: if you add a NOS kit you need to make sure that your motor can handle this or you will need a box to pick up the parts.

That's great if all you want to do is run the ground

If you do any actual airboating, you'll have to be real careful because you won't have much throttle response that you'll need to keep from sinking if you encounter unexpected waves, wakes, stumps etc etc.... or either you'll use a whole lot of nitrous

Or for under 1700 bucks, you can put a 72" Q Series Sensenich prop and set it to turn about 3000 RPM max. That will also give you plenty of throttle response, and it will also be quieter than a lot of propellers out there.

That and frog spit, and a 2 gallon bucket with a bottle of dish soap in it. Next best thing to a gear box!

P.S. nitrous is very addictive. I have at least one friend that can't keep from using a bottle every weekend that he goes out!

yep nitrous is loads of fun.......then you get that funny "wawawawa' in your ears and fall over, get up and do it again, till it all runs out and the parties over. good stuff :)

its probably more to get the engine to rev out quicker, the sudden jolt of 150 or 200 more hp is what 'breaks" the boat loose not necessarly more rpms, but quicker rpms.

forget aout max prop RPM. How NOS works on a boat is you put more pitch in the prop then your motor can turn without the NOS. You will lower your cruse speed bcause you are turning more pitch and burn less fuel. If you do get hung up you hit the bottom and the 200hp shot will allow your motor to turn the bigger prop more RPM thus making more thrust. 90% of the time once your break loose you can go. You want to make sure you buy a good kit because you can burn a motor up real quick with NOS. When you hit the botton you need to have the fuel ratio right or you will lean out.

Ebay is not working right now but you can buy a (SNIPER NOS KIT) for around $350.00 if I am correct. These kits are not very hard to install on an airboat. Just remember to start small and work your way up on the jets. You can change the jets in these kits ( 50hp,75hp,100hp,etc). If you get into the whole goofy gas thing you sould buy a spark retard box like a Mallory 6BTM box. These ignition boxes will retard your timing when you hit the bottom so that you do not get detonation. Nitro does not burn it is just a chemical intercooler, so if you do not supply enough fuel and go lean you will cook the motor. Most people who hurt their motors on this stuff do it because they keep going bigger until the motor just can't take it. If you put a 500hp shot on a mild crate motor you will need a box for the parts.

The way N2O works is you just dump a bunch of fuel in the motor thru the fuel solenoid! Then you need a correct amount of air to burn it. N2O is not flammable but it is a good oxidizer and releases a ton of oxygen. So all the Nitrous does is deliver the required oxygen needed to burn the extra fuel you just dumped in the motor!

And the one part Nitrogen expads with heat to increase combustion pressure further

What shot can a stock 500 caddy take before possible damage. Has anyone put just a 50 or 75 shot just need a couple hundred rpm s extra every once in a while. Anybody have first hand experience with that set up?

A 50hp shot might make a Honda jump but it will not register on a 500. A stock Caddy will take a 200hp shot with much trouble as long as you do not plan on holding it down until the bottle is empty. The 100-200 shots are a wet system where as a 50 shot is a dry system. Make sure you get enough fuel when you turn on the goofy gas or you will burn those stock pistons up. The 200 shot will give you the 200 rpm. Caddy motors love nitrous with a passion.
