Disasembly of the CH2 belt unit

I'm going over my boat for next season , The dust seal on the top of the unit is leaking some grease and throwing it on my rudders According to the manufacture I have to send it back to the factory to have it fixed how hard is it to take off ? I never tore into this area of the boat before . Since I have it apart should I change out the belt ? anything else I should look at since it is apart . The guy that had the boat before me pumped to much grease into the unit , He said he would pump until he seen grease starting to come out.

Nothing to it man. Take your prop off and set it aside.

You see the circle of bolts holding the center in the housing? Take ALL of those bolts out. The whole center pully, spingle, and bearing will come out as one piece.

From there you can see how it all goes together. We used to heat the bearing housing with a rose-bud torch beofre we pulled the bearling. Use an arbor press and press in a new bearing and seal or if its just the outside seal, you can just clean up the unit, get rid of the excess grease everywhere and tap in a new grease seal. I bet someone here will remember which way the shaft comes out even. Whether you really have to take it out to replace the seal or if the prop flange comes off and the new seal will simply slip in over the shaft. Havent looked at one since 96.

In general its just a big Tinker-Toy Not much hidden ya cant figure a way to get to.

Inspect the belt and if its not looking frayed or cracked just slap it back together.

Changing the belt is way harder than changing the bearing seal.

I think they have a diagram on their web site even, maybe hmmmm.

Check them at: http://www.airboatdriveunits.com/ch2.htm

If not they got some pretty good pictures anyway.

Regardless once the top chunk is out you can see how it is assembeled and take it apart and reassemble from there.

If your not comfortable digging into it, then by all means send it to them and let them do it for ya.

Its a fine drive unit when used as dsigned.

some heat the housing and or freeze the bearing to get it back together. I would try franklin company for instructions they probably are easy to get along with.

Scotty ,
There was a photo on the site , Looks easy but just wanted to make sure. More than likely its just the dust seal nothing loose everything is tight , I know that if I pump my argo wheels to full of grease the dust seal blows. Can I get these seals at the local parts store ? Or is it a special order part

Sadly as far as I know both the bearings and the seals have to come from Franklin, and they ain't cheep.

Cntry they are very easy to get along with.

Just a tip for belt replacement on all of the Franklin units ..... the belts are made by Goodyear. Check with an industrial supply house in your area the next time you need to replace one. Take the old one with you.

I saved over $100.

You can check Century Drive Units for parts that interchange. The owner of Century was the partner of Franklin and owns 50% of the patents and was the partner that did all the gear cutting. Franklin is now outsourcing the gear cutting and machining work. You can get there number from Faron if you need to get in touch with them.

Housing diameter and shaft diameter and depth of seal should be all you need. Franklin might have thier own number on the seal but I doubt it. Why would anyone manufacture a special seal when they can grab one off the shelf. Last mercury lower unit I did had 1 out of about 10 bearings that was proprietory, even the seals were off the shelf. Like the Goodyear belt, (and there are other belt manufacturer's steppin on toes with same pitch) Worth checking out. You will probably have more than one choice of seal just going by dimentions and there will probably be seals that look better than what the factory put in. 8)

Are you sure you need to change the seal? If you over grease it, it will come out. I think they recommend 3 shots of greese every 25 hours of operation. If it is over greased it will spray out all over everything. You might want to clean it off and not grease it for a while and see if it stops. Sort of like berring buddies on trailer axels, If its full of grease nothing else can get in so there is not much to worry about if it leaks except the mess.

in the process of going through mine agian, but had to replace a belt this summer. I have been giving her two pumps every 20-25 hours.

Tim,
That's thinking outside the box. It has been like that since I bought it , I just always pumped the 2 pumps in every 20 hrs religiously . I'll wipe it clean and give your thoughts a try. Every time something goes wrong I'm always looking at the high dollar or hardest fix...I need to start small and work my way up.........

Thanks all that's why I love this site,

So much knowledge on this site even Albert Einstein might learn something...... :D
