Does the dark side really have cookies????

I’ve always been an aircraft/GPU guy but I think if I was to get or build another boat it I think I am going CM and gear box.

I don’t even know where to start with a motor. I want something carbed that makes good power but not super hopped up and unreliable on a 13-6 aluminum hull. Not sure how wide to go. Let’s hear it

My hull is 13'9" x 7'9" ,very happy! I can carry 4 people a 65 yeti and 20 yeti and a dry box with ease, with a 6.0 Ls. I do have a aluminum block so I have some weight savings with that, but the motor is basically stock except for a cam change. Can't go wrong with a carb on a Ls motor :salute: :salute:

u can build lots of reliable power with reliable parts and a reliable builder..why leave some power on the table

Rich is right, just depends on how much MONEY you want to spend...

I honestly can’t answer the money question because I have no idea what my budget will be in a couple years. They way I am looking at it is a new 0540 fresh build is $13,500 from Schmidt runouts are around $8000. I’d try to stay lower than that if possible with motor and gear box.

A new drive is $3700 so that leaves you $4,000

I would be looking in the budget LS direction. Low mile 5.3 take out will probably be the easiest to find. OneEyeGator has posted some info in builds he has done. Quite a few other guys as well as numerous Technical articles.

Second on the 5.3. My buddy just recently put a 5.3 on a 14 ft Panther with stainless rigging. I think he paid about $700.00 for the engine, I gave him a cam I had out of my LSA, he bought a Holley FI system and bought headers from Norman Clay. All in he's got less than $3,500.00 into the engine and it runs really good. I don't know exactly what he paid for the gearbox (I believe around $3,700) but it's a 2.68 Rotator turning 82" 3-blade Sensenich.

Yes If you do some research there a lot of budget option for building a reliable motor. A lot of stock bottom end (SBE) motors running on airboats.

LS1 tech
Pirate 4x4 (the tech garage second)
Hotrod, richard holdener,

Junk yard search engine www.car-parts.com just need to know what the motor you want came out of.
5.3 500-1200
6.0 iron block 1200-2200
LS2 2200-4000
LS3 more lol
The iron to Aluminum block is worth about 85lbs

The LSA cam diggin is talking about has some gains over the stock cam, but it is more an EFI cam. If you go EFi the TBSS intake produces better torque than all other stock intakes until you go aftermarket and most of those only have gains in the upper portion of rpm range.

Wiring harness is about 250-300 to get modified then another 250-600 to get it flashed and tuned.
Carb if you have one great if not 400-750.00
intake/ MSD kit 750.00

Know that there are 3 different front end accessory groups - alternator, water pump and related pulleys Truck, f-body and Corvette and they do not mix

But realize that a lot of the stuff you read is for engines turning way more RPM than an airboat motor.
There are several companies making timing box like MSD - Daytona sensor.
I have a stock 5.3 that had 113K and has been on 3 different boats over 8 years, I wouldn't hesitate to put it back on a run it again.
We run the gulf it is normal to run an hour may be more at 3800-4200 on the way out
Currently run a SBE 6.0 with a low lift cam .525 706 heads with 2.00 intake valve, upgraded pushrods, rockers and timing set on a 14' Alumitec. 706 heads bump the 6.0 LQ4 stock compression to 10.4 or so depending of how much it takes to clean up the head surface.

Pm sent

Good luck

Are you trying to get away from the hunting avgas aspect of having an aircraft powered boat? If so, I would suggest a full retrofit to your aircraft engine to electronic fuel injection and ignition and run E85, very efficient and being a closed loop system, the fuel will not stagnate in the carb as with outboard to weedeaters with E10/87-93 octane Obama gas, just something to ponder.

Lets put the ac and gear drive in relation to new cost? A new 0540 basic is 125k air worthy.
Point noted to either sbc or ls or bbc?
Very few if any new ac built rigs on here if were talking new this century power?
More opt the other way around with ls going up!

Tough time in the industry to say whats best, 500 caddie or 0540 from yesteryear or a 350 stroked, or even something as exotic as a dd diesel alum block?

I have had two car motor boats. Although I have been pretty. happy with my current setup, I ponder owning a 540av

Wish I could borrow one and see what’s up with em

If I was gonna spend $125K on an engine, it would certainly be going into something that flys and makes money doing so. I don’t think a new AV engine is worth comparing.

What’s up with the 540 has as much or more to do with the hull as the engine, it’s a package deal.

I can confirm that you can buy cookies when fueling at Sunoco, but buy some Rolaids for the heartburn that comes with them.

The airport has free popcorn and coffee :bounce:

A built 383 will put you in the 5K to 6K range and buy you 450 to 500 +- in Torque and HP. A build 383 runs well and is dependable. 427 MAS rigged from them ready to roll is in the 12K range and should be in the 600 HP and Torque range. There are countless options and price variables. I run the hell out of my 383 with 2.38 box and 82" R series prop, no serious problems yet! I do have my eye on a 427 when she gets tired!
