Dog Huntin`

I kinda need a little help/advise. I have a 2 year old Catahoula that needs the chance to run with some dogs that know what there doin`. I got him to blood trail and he does ok but my beagle does better so I figured I`d make him a hog dog. He`s been out with other dogs once before and did okay so I figured he had it figured out. But yesterday I put up 5 hogs in front of him and the best he did was watch them run away and the worst he did was actually run away from one. I`ve never owed a dog that didn`t "earn" his keep so his days may be numbered around here. Problem is he`s a great dog and the family love him. HELP!!!!
I`m willing to pay for gas etc.

hey buddy, ive been hog huntin for a looong time and i have and have had some pretty good dogs and ive been through a pile, good and bad.... the best i can tell u is that running a dog with other finished dogs one time aint goin to show the dog ur training enough to learn a whole lot.... a lot of times when u run a dog with finished dogs, it may do good but at the same time, its a lot of monkey-see, monkey-do... they kinda follow the other dogs around and do what they are doin and might not kno why or what they're doin after just one hunt.... if u wana make something out of that Cat then u need to keep taking him with and without other dogs as many times as it takes and catch hogs with him even if he doesnt do much, as long as he is there and sees wat its all about.... people, including my self, train dogs by starting in bay-pens and moving to open pastures and hobbling the hogs legs and letting it run and all that but nothing in this world will make a hog dog better than actually just going huntin and letting them figure it all out.... and ive never dealt a whole lot with Cats, i just run florida currs but im sure u'll find the same results deoending on the blood the dog came from... dont give up too easy, a lot of times a dog wont turn on and be a jam up dog till a year and a half to 2 years anyways after all the puppy is outta them.... and also remember, it is a necessity to punish a dog for doin bad but it is almost as important, if not more to reward ur dog and let it kno ur pleased with what its doin when ur training itand after catchin a hog with him and whatever else, all the currs i ever trained respond well to that.....well buddy i hope u can find this info helpful and anything else u might wana kno just write me back.... take it easy, catch 'em up...

before ya think about the 2 cent solution give me a pm been wanted one of them cats some dogs just to smart to take a chance on getten boar cut they make great cow dogs workin dogs

thanks for the support wild hair.... i just got home form runnin the dogs tonight and i forgot i meant to mention to Limey that i probably cant make it to st. pete to run dogs with ya cuz its kinda a long haul from ft. pierce but if ur ever comin 'round these parts, st. lucie county/ft. pierce, write me a pm or sumthin and maybe we'll go tie one... later yall, catch 'em up

Thanks for all the good advice. I`d gladly drive th St Lucie just to see some good dogs run a hog. There ain`t no way I`m givin this dog up, I`d be sleeping in his empty kennel, but I just want him to be good fro something.
I don`t have access to private land so I gotta use public and I can only run him on the Kissimmee river fro a couple more weeks. I heard some where that you can hunt Gardener Marsh for hogs all year. Any trith to that???
I`ll keep after him. I once had a GSP that everyone said was no good but he turned out fine at about 2.5 so we`ll see.

he Limey Chris, havent seen this thread active in a while, just wanted to see what became that Cat u were taling about?? good i hope, but give us an update if u see this post....

He`s doo`n ok I took him to the river and he finnaly seemed to get it together and bayed and caught a 40#er I`m looking for anywhere i can take him just ti run a few and see what happens. Can I take him into Gardener Marsh ( leggally)

I appreciate the follow up hope you`ll doo`n good too.

glad to hear it man, thats good, and about garnder marsh, ive run my dogs there and seen others as well, but not exactly sure on the enitre legality issues of the matter, i guess we'll have to check with FWC or something like that to keep ourselves straight!

Hey sLeAzy772,

Where'd you get your dogs from down there. Alot of those dogs from down there came out of our line of dogs. I kind of got out of it for a little while but I am back full bore now.

You can Hog hunt year around in Gardner Marsh it is open land and operates under state rules and regulations so that means Hog Hunting year-round and with dogs. Right now that area has a few, just don't let the dogs go across the fence the neighbor (friendly landowner) don't go for that so be careful keep them in between the fence

My dad, Jim Huck, and his friends have had this blood line going for a long time, upwards around 25 to 30 years right here in fort pierce..... soem real good dogs come from it... but im not exactly sure where they got the dogs to start with all them years ago....

That answers my question as to who you are and where the dogs came from. Tell your dad Grayson said hi.

damn Grayson, i didnt kno u were on this site too, havent seen ya in a while.... haha... well hope all is well up there in cocoa and business is doing well... we'll talk to ya later man...
