Ok Guys I know you are going to be in shock on this one but I bought a 0290G lycoming from a friend of mine yester day in hopes to put a small light weight Airboat together like the one Rick has to keep Down in West Palm Beach so I don't have to trailer mine down all the time, I don't know much about this engine other than it is in good shape and has been stored in a hangar for years out of the weather So I hope some of you Aircraft guy's will give me some advice on what I need to do, It need's a carb and a tac drive and I know some of you guys put dual mags on the ground power units I guess for better performance and what kind of hub do you run on the front the one that is on there looks a little light to hook a prop to I have a good friend that works on small Airplanes all the time that's going to help me go thru the engine and look it over and we are going to do a compression check I will get some pictures soon and post them so you can tell me what you think

I fell off my iceberg!
Sniper, this borders on, on, dare I say....... Blasphemy...

I knew I was going to catch it but I NEVER FIGURED YOU WOULD BE THE FIRST ONE OH WELL I JUST WANTED A BOAT TO PLAY WITH WHEN I GO HOME TO WEST PALM IT SURE WILL BE A LOT DIFFERANT FROM THE TRAILER QUEEN BUT I FIGURED I COULD PUT IT TOGETHER WITH OUT SPENDING A LOT OF MONEY AND HAVING TWO AIRBOAT CAN'T BE A BAD THING NO MATTER WHAT IT IS POWERED BY :?

Sniper,
There is lots of info available online to convert the engine to experimental aircraft. GOOGLE search and try this YAHOO group. The guy Mahlon knows Lycoming.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lycoming/

Don George Aircraft in Orlando was selling takeoff ma4-5 carbs at a pretty
good price. What kind of intake is on it now? You might have to convert the oil pan to an aircraft style too.

Sniper, I'm proud of ya ..... if I could have a second airboat it would definitely be air cooled. I love em.

And like Cowboy says, "Chicks dig em too." :)

They are a clasic I have all ways liked them it's just not practical for Search & Rescue but this is going to be a ride boat not a Work horse I would kinda like a palm beach style hull but at this point I just want to get thr engine all squaired away but I did luck up and got an Aircraft oil pan with the engine I was wondering if the flange on the front of thr engine that is part of the caser has to be remaved ?

You know I'm only joking with ya Wingman.. :D :D
But an aircraft engine? Oh the pain, the pain of it all............
The the main thing with any of our toys, have fun and be safe......

Oh now Im really catching it I guess I should have just painted a bull's eye on my Butt, may be I should just get a big rubber band and wind it up and use that for power, oh boy it' going to be a long day and I think target practice is just starting

Hey Bud,
I would'nt mind having a nasty auto boat one day, but I'll probably always have aircooled stuff in the corral too. So there ya go!

I think you should take that motor to Waterthunder, and let him sort it for ya. What are friends for right? He knows plenty about A/C engines I'm sure.

Well... perhaps that ain't a good idea.
All those chicks hanging out in his shop looking at your new motor might get him in trouble with Mrs. Thunder!

Olf,
BPS came up with the "chicks digg'em" thing. I can't take credit for his humor.

Cowboy that sounds like an Idea I think he can work on anything with a piston ,heck I believe he could soup up an Aircompressor if you gave him a chance I guess you would call waterThunder working on an Aircraft moror WaterThunder Hell :P

I would love to work on an Allison V12 now that would be cool. I have built a few A/C motors most were strokers and such I had fun with em. You know you can throw a big arm in it and some angle valve 540 jug's make you a nasty A.K.A. 200HP 4 BANGER.

Ace's over 8's

I was Born in West Palm Beach and lived on 45th street untill I moved to Georgia my mom and brother both live in Palm Beach Gardens my sister lives in Stewart when I get this second Boat built I will keep the boat at or place in jupiter or my brothes house in Palm Beach Gardens.

Cool, I've lived here for 37 years now. Just a bit south of PGA in a Sleepy little town called Lake Worth. Depending on your age we may have crossed paths. After this years hunting season, If I still own a boat maybe we'll hook up for a Ride.
Don't sweat the 125, you'll make up for it at the Gas pumps.

i know i love 2 boats the small 4 cyl makes me smile so much my face starts hurting but i should have taken the big one to the poker run, that 25mph wind was a bear . left it on the hill rode with country that was also a thrill also rode with jdotson got off just in time must be living right.

Now if you wer'e talking women, and you was gona leave the
biggun in Georgia and go to west palm to play with the little one
you would be in deep . well you know where this is going
aint air boats great.

Thunder, I had a buddy that ran the pullin tractors. Tim Engler and I went to school together, and his uncle ran the Texaco station on S. Main street in my hometown. Tim was a 5 time World Champion.

When they started out he was tryin to run the Allisons. His first Nat'l Championship came with a tractor running three of them, but he soon moved to the Donovan's and Rodec's because of being able to interchange parts.

His last win was with 5 of them ..... all on one tractor, and all of em near 1500 hp each.

If I ever hit the right 6 numbers, I'm gonna get with you and we're gonna build a HOG !! Rodec or Donovan (your call) and the hill will only be a speed bump.
