duramax 6.6

who has figured out the issues with duramax installed in airboats..looking for advice..we have motor ,wiring, computer, mounts, intercooler figured out..having trouble when props are installed with surge and tuning.. runs perfect with no props..we read you have to change injectors, turbo, cam shaft????SEEMS TO BE A DEAD END..SHOULD WE JUST GO TO LS AND FORGET THIS DIESEL..

We were trying a stock set up. For dependability,, got all excited when she fired up and ran., put 84 inch 4 blade props on it, can't even get it off idle just chugs

Not that I know a damn thing about the Duramax but the first thing that pops into my mind is the ECM is looking for feedback from possibly the transmission. It probably senses a load but not getting the proper signal from a sensor no longer connected. I say this because when I did the tune on my LSA, the transmission sensor part of the tune had been deactivated.

That's all been programmed out.. It's the load from the props it will not come off idle, just chugs.. No props revs perfect

GTO in Ocala built one a while back. You may get some info from them. I seem to remember them also building a boat with a smaller diesel for use out of the country. I would go LS.

I agree the ls is looking better all the time.. We are finding out the weight and multiple problems we keep hitting.. was hoping Duramax would work for dependability and low end torque..

Maybe too much prop? 84" 4-blade on a stock engine with 1.5-1 box? I know it's diesel, but have you checked with the prop manufacturer? Quick google search says only 445hp, doesn't seem like enough to turn it.

Possible, been talking with Texas company they are saying the Bosch computer system will not work.. Computer detects the props vibration and acts like knock sensor shutting it down.. Going to wait, get more info from them and hopefully figure this out.. Would love to get this working but starting to get discouraged

The diesel engine torque should be enough to turn prop but if we have to change turbo, injectors, cam so be it..

Like Blackcoffee said GTO had one still may have a video of it on there website.

Track down keith at modern performance engines in anthony he may be able to enlighten you

I do know it was hard on gearboxes. To me LS is way easier but what's the fun in that

I know nothing about the Duramax, but I have read similar details in various posts over the years. The fact that none of these new turbo diesel's are offered with manual transmissions is a good clue that drivetrain feedback might be an issue when pushing the tune on these things.

Here is one older posts showing success is possible, the originator is up north, but he does mention a tuner that sorted him out.

Good Luck(y)

I believe Shane @ industrial injection was involved in building a duramax boat several years ago never followed up on what happened to it

As for the tuning issue EFI live is a highly recommended and widely used platform for the duramax engine just need someone very savvy in tuning the duramax to get it 100% might be able to get someone that lives from a great distance away willing to help write tunes for an autocal for you to upload yourself and have the ability to record data streams for them to modify them accordingly according to what the data tells to optimize the file for your current setup.

When it comes to tuning a diesel it is nothing similar to tuning a gas engine so research is your friend and finding the right guy willing to help as a couple have already mentioned.

Really hope it turns out good for ya and remember these things are just big airpumps eliminate all the restrictive components before you start throwing upgrades at it. Simple upgrades that I would suggest before throwing a turbo on is up pipes and quality down pipe, and non restrictive intake pre turbo.

Get the tuning and restrictions done before turbo or you will be just holding that turbo back. Stock turbo still has more potential inside with factory up pipe and downpipe

Just for what it’s worth but this is also coming from a guy that just stepped out of the direct drive world and building an LS boat
