Ear Protection for Children?

Ol Yeller

Well-known member
Before I try to reinvent the wheel I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas. I've got to find some ear portection for a 1 year old before I can take her airboating. I think she'll take ear muffs off faster than I can put them back on. So I was wondering if anyone's been down this road before. Like maybe some custom ear plugs or something? Until then I'll have to use my kikker boat.

I hate to say this Bill - But you may want to look into those ear muffs designed for dogs. ONLY because they have a chin strap.

Oh!!! Stop the presses! with that in mind - how hard would it be to rivet/glue or otherwise attach some velcro to some existing muffs and make a chin strap for them? You could even sew some elastic into the chin strap. for comfort/movement. Probably need another strap or two (think respirator mask strap) for the top/back of the head. That thing would not go anywhere.

Million dollar idea there for someone good with marketing! Take it with my compliments! :D

Of course - the greenies are going to argue the best ear protection is a roof and 4 walls.... leave the kid at home. Bah!!!!

Good luck Bill!!!! :)

Mood thats a helluva idea!!!! I`ll be hitting wally world tonite for sure!!! My 1 n a 1 /2 year old daughter LOVES my airboat and I havn`t had her out cause I tried the muffs at the house and they never really made it on her  and little ears a not able to take that kinda sound just yet  Oh she`s gunna be so happy!!!

my kids are older of course but they don't like the plug and rather wear the muffs I think cableas and mack sell kid size ear muff sets that are small enough to actual fit a younger child, but that strap ideas sound pretty good t

Try swimmers wax
we used it for our children when they were Little to keep the water out while swimming other wise they would get congestion
while it was in there ears i swear they couldn't hear cuz they wouldn't mine for a minute

maybe it was just cuz there kids????

anyways give it a try on yourself see what you think

Great ideas about the chin strap and ear wax. I'm also thinking about a strapping a car seat on the floor in front of us. That way she won't fly out if we stop quick and she won't squirm loose. Plus there is enough structure so if we turned over, which I promise won't happen, she won't have the boat on top of her. Any thoughts on this? I think the back seat is out of the question because of the extra noise and danger from the front of the engine. Plus with the car seat on the floor in front of us we can keep a good eye on her and give her attention.

don't know how I feel about strapping in but you cold go to auto parts store and buy a universal seat belt that way you cold remove the car seat quick and easy

my little girl is almost 2.. and she loves the boat but hates the muffs.. she'll wear them for about 30 minutes the my wife just covers her ears. I just bought a Q series ....we'll see how that works.

My little girl loves the boat, when i would take her out by myself I would ratchet-strap the carseat down and ride real careful. She has been going out since 6 months old and usually falls asleep during the ride, hehe.

I have to say Please,Please,Please do not strap her in, just in case anything did happen.
Every time I rolled or sunk an airboat it was on accident, I never planned for it and it always happened so quick I couldn't do anything to stop it and I was lucky enough to be thrown free of the boat.
this would be a very preventable tragety.
I have known 2 people who accidentally drown their dogs because they had the lead strapped to the airboat when it sank.
Here are some other reasons NOT TO STRAP ANYONE IN AN AIRBOAT...

http://www.southernairboat.com/phpBB2/v ... t=seatbelt

If you wanted to strap the carseat down and NOT put the belt on her you might be better off.
If it were me, I would put her in your lap and hang on to her...just in case.

Glad you like the idea Joe. It occurred to me as I was writing the reply so give credit to Bill for asking!

Good points about strapping someone to an airboat. Just don't do it.

Bill & Carol - Please make sure you have some eye protection for the kid. I'd strap on a bunch of flotation (acts as body armor too in case of collision with debris or the ground) and hang on to the kid. Taking another idea from the animal world... I've got a PFD for my dog - that has a large handle on the back of it. I can (well COULD before the dog grew to be over 120 pounds) pick up the dog using the handle. I'd take a child's PFD and sew on some extra webbing so it has a handle or two on every side for gripping from every angle. Just don't tie them down!!!

one other thing to consider in the child seat on the footstand - the bugs, spiderwebs, seeds, debris, etc. You don't want to put the kid right in the blast zone!!!

We know you are an extra safe driver - But like Randy says - they don't call them "accidents" because they are planned in advance!!!

Way to go!! ::hi-5:: for introducing them to the outdoor world from an early age. They'll be well adjusted when they grow up for sure!

I got my son peltors the kind that you can hear until a certain db then they shut off he loves them dont have a problem with him trying to take them off

Cool boat! 8) Went 300/6 Ford to GPU? How do they compare? Maby should be another thread?

larry,
man some people will just use any excuses to go ride

when I first got divorced Austin was only two and he rode every thing for Track hoes to plane of course the boat and he would just sit with me so I could hold on to him if it got rough.
they boat started on boats small and the kids get used to wearing a jacket and the ear muff when we stop they take them off . I tried letting them use ear plugs those muff get hot sometimes but they like the muff they say there quieter.

my little boy always wheres a life vest and at night i tie a kem light to it. i tried the plugs he didnt like that but once i put the peltors on him he thought it was neat that he could here with them on

Thank all! I don't know what I was thinking when I talked about belting her in. For sure I won't do it and we'll hold her tight instead. I think in the back of my mind I knew it wasn't a good idea and maybe that's why I threw it out there. Thanks again and I'll check out those pelters.

I could use some ear protection for Children.

Can't remember one quiet evening since we brought the kid home!

Oh well.. Their worth it!
