Electric motor/trolling motor

Hello all,

I'm in need of suggestions for a trolling motor or electric motor setup for a unique application, so I'm open to customized solutions. I'm a fish biologist and we need to be able to deploy and collect gill nets off the bow of our airboat. Our primary need is reverse capabilities and manipulation of the bow position.

Keeping the bow clear is the main concern. Running 300' of monofilament netting with a trolling motor near the bow is not going to work. It seems like our options would be to consider a side mounted trolling motor (we were thinking the Motorguide Xi5), or something that resembles the Lenco Troll'N Tabs system, which doesn't appear to be sold anymore. Even the side-mount troller is problematic, as we often pull nets up the side of the boat depending on wind. I've seen some electric twin motor setups on the transom but can't find much info.

Help?

Try a grassrake. Mount a trolling motor on top of the rake. Get one of the expensive tolling motors like an Ipilot.
80lb unit with a remote control. Use it as an anchor. Position your airboat to load the net from either side.

How deep is the water that you are in? Power Poles with ten feet poles to anchor the boat.

I used to have one of those remote mount Minn Kota 24V trolling motor heads like you show mounted on the trim tabs. The kit I had was made to mount to the outboard to engage with the engine down but off. I mounted it to an old 7.5 Hp engine less motor and foot and used it as a giant trolling motor for gator hunting. For your purposes, I would never stick a prop of any kind in the water, I'd use a honda generator and a box fan before I stuck a prop in the water near your big net!

I suggest you listen to UnoWho's input on the power poles. Those things will solve many (but not all) your issues. They will pay off by preventing the others (Prop in net) and saving on electrical load.
