engine problem any ideas?

Not sure what to even ask now. I had planed to duck hunt today but obviously I am not now but would like t figure it out before the weekend since this is the end of season

I have a 4 cyl continental I checked and do have spark, I have good compression, and I have fuel going into the carb an out of the drain so there's fuel.
The other day it smelled flooded and backfired so I stopped and then yesterday after noon went to start it it fired up an ran about a minute then died and has not started again

I am at a loss as to what to look at next since I have the three main elements fire, compression, fuel anyone have a suggestion :?: besides a stick of dynamite (witch has crossed my mind)

I would pull your plug's and see if their wet. When you checked fuel it sounds like you checked the drain plug! That doesn't mean fuel is going thru your boosters that just means it's getting to your fuel bowl. If you have spark and compression the only 3 things it could be is fuel is not entering your motor or too much fuel or the spark is occurring at the wrong time.

you are correct I checked the drain plug and the fuel line coming into the carb I assumed if it is there the rest is up to the carb.

The plugs are dry does that mean I need to break the carb down? and if so where can I find a break down for a marvel aircraft carb?

let me correct that statement the top plugs are dry the bottom plugs are wet. I took them out dried off and spin the engine a few time the blow the cyl out then replaced plugs but still does not start

Those engines are pretty simple. Since you have compression and spark the only thing left is fuel. Could be water in the carburetor. A single drop will plug up the works.
Make sure your timing is set correctly and check the fuel for water. Spray some ether and see if it runs then. If it does then it is fuel related. If it doesn't start with ether you need to look at some other items. Let us know how it goes.

it's always the simple things that are far out of my league

I did think about water and drained the fuel bowl and replaced the filter, tried the either last nite still did not start. could I have changed the timing some how when I changed the flywheel ?

I had a similar problem and after screwing around for hours with A1mudpuppy and Swampjet, I gave up. Since I'm not a mechanic I took it to one and after a mag rebuild she purred liked a kitten...

Waterthunder,
I checked one plug on each mag both had fire when the engine turned over. I forget what cowboy called it but remember both mags are the type that fire so I would have thought even one would have started it .
turn my mags???? I don't think this is what your talking about but I had turned the engine by hand both directions a few times in the process of getting the new flywheel aliened

I can build and fabricate all types of stuff but I am about as far form a mechanic as any person can get

My guess is your mags got wet or just gave up the ghost. You may be getting fire but not enough to ignite the fuel once it is under pressure. To turn the mags out of time means you have to loosen the two nuts holding the mag and then turn them. One good mag is enough to make the engine run, but one could have already gone bad and now the second one went.

Since it didn't start with ether I think it's time to look at the mags. If they are good then we can look at something else.

Gold,
I'll try and come over there tomorrow night, and see if we can get her going.
Give me a call tomorrow.

Thanks , I really did try to figure it out with out bugging you about it but would greatly appreciate your help .

to check if fuel is not reaching your cylinders, pour adequate amount of gas through your filter and crank. if it fires then your carb is not mixing fuel and air. maybe clogged lines or so. check ur carb.

caution, if ur engine had histories of back firing this would not be a good idea. if no backfiring, u may even wet your filter with gasoline and see if it fires. dont pour too much and have an extinguisher near by :D
