Engine Stand Material

Crew I've got a question. I did a quick search but was unable to find what I was looking for.
I'm in the process of ordering a new hull and engine stand. I've talked to a couple guys that have questioned why I want to run an aluminum engine stand. Has anyone had any problems with their aluminum stands cracking, fatiguing or just not working? I'm going to be putting an automotive 502 on the stand and really don't want to have any catastrophic problems.

Thanks in advance.
Josh

if AL gets brittle when its cold why do snowmobiles use primarily AL as a material? I have worked with AL for many years I have never seen it get brittle when cold. If it was me, either, Al, DOM or chromoly, then powdercoat it all

i don't know much about metals and their strength, but why take a chance on something like this? go with something that you know will hold up, not something that will probably hold up. just my opinion.

I suppose I should clarify. I'll be running on the Great Salt Lake and for about half the year I'll be running ice.
Thanks again to those that have responded.

I personally would run mild steel just for the simple fact that just about anyone can weld it and welders are everywhere. I'm not so sure that the aluminum handles the vibrations as well. Silver Dollar and Redriver boat use aluminum engine stands and seem to be holding up.

There is no reason not to use steel, SS, or Aluminum for a engine stand. You will not have any problems, as long as it is designed and built correctly. Cost of SS and Aluminum will be 4 to 5 times that of steel, but it sure looks pretty. Let face it guy’s any thing that is well built and pretty always cost more money. :) :) :) :) :) :)

1" EMT + DOM + SS +SQUARE TUBING + ALUM+ ECT EVERONE DOES IT DIFFERENT BUT I USE 1" EMT OR DOM

maybe pipewelders in miami could help u out. one thing is for sure the work they do is top notch! diamondback and others mentioned ubove could help as well, their work is top shelf too.

what kinda hull are gonna run?

Either a Diamondback or a Red River I haven't completely made up my mind.

Anyone want to chime in on those two manufactures?

they are in the business and build agood product, if they didnt liability issues would put them on their cans. classic airboats builds good hardware and they also build stands out of steel, aluminuim, and stainless.i have a 13.6 with a steel stand, it has taken a roll over, two foot waves in the laguna madre and has not given up the ghost. i couldnt see any difference with alu or stainless. all of the builders that sell to the public have more to loose than to gain. they have worked out all the bugs and come up with something that holds together be it steel, alu or stainless. jmo good luck
