What temp are you guys normally running on your aircraft engines in about 90 degrees. I have a 4-cyl continental and I am running around 220 and sometimes 240, that seems alittle bit high to me. Thanks for any info.
That temp is too high. Every boat I've gotten from Florida had the same heat problem. The first thing was to connect a large oil cooler. I have a gauge for the oil temp and one for the cylinder temp. It really helps to know whats going on with the engine. I haven't had temps over 160 with my current oil cooler and I keep cylinder temps below 400.
That is way to high, you want to keep your temp around 180 no higher than 200. When it gets that hot you'll want to let it cool down by letting idle around 800 to 1000 rpm.
How would I go about putting a cooler on an a65 with a sump, the oil has no lines to hook into. It just has a sump and a place for the temp gauge, nothing else. Any more info would be great, thanks.
That would be great to take it to an airboat mechanic, problem is there is no airboat mechanics around here. You guys have more airboats in one county then we have in the hole state of utah. And all the small airports around here don't know much about my prehistoric engine. It's a 1942 continental a-65. I don't plan on running much when it's hot outside being I am mainly using it for duck hunting. It's just a new toy and it's a lot of fun. I just don't want to burn it up before the hunts start. So if any body could tell me where an oil port to hook into is located that would be great. Thnks again for any more.
You might want to look on here for the threads that gave out the numbers for some of the a/c mechanics. they usually are pretty easy to deal with as for helping with info especially if you live that far away, it aint like your taking money outta their pockets... search for mike thurman, j.c. stanley. for starters.
The max RPM for the A-65 is 2300. That has to hurt trying to get on plane. I hope you have a light weight boat. The oiling for that engine won't allow for a cooler but you could get an O-200 sump, which would increase your oil capacity from 4 to 6 quarts. The next thing I would do is build a shroud. A shroud should cool it down 30 degress.
I wish I had better answers for you. If you have the money, there are lots of Lycoming O-290 ground power units. They usually sell for $1500 and up.
The boat does ok on getting on plane, it's no speed demond but I am not looking for speed. I am happy wit the speed and the way it runs, just don't want to burn up an engine during the summer months. My boat gets 23mph in deep water and around 30-34 in skinny water. Like I said no speed demond but it beats walking for 5 miles each way in 10 inches of water and 24 inches of mud under that. I will eventually up grade to a bigger boat but for now I am having fun with the one I have. I have only taken it out 5 times and maybe have 10 hours of stick time under my belt. I am still learning alot. Thanks for the info on up grading to a different sump. I might try the shroud thing first. If you guys have any more ideas let me know. Thanks agin.
My thoughts too. I run a 72x42 on my A-65 Aeronca airplane and I can't get it over 2100 static. Once airborne I can get 2300 but not on the ground. I only have a 66 inch prop on my 160 horse Lycoming. Maybe it's not a paddle prop. I know I'm not the smartest person on the site but I do have a lot of experience.
My boat is a home made aluminum hull. It is 15 feet long and 5 and a half feet wide. I run a 60x34 prop. I sit in the front on a truck bed tool box behind a windshield . We don't make boats out here to look at, we make boats to get us where we are going. The salt water in the great salt lake is way to harsh on things to make them pretty.
Where are you located? I live in Riverton. I may have a cd with the a65 repair/service manual on it. I don't have the A65 so if you want I'll look for it. Are you going to the run on Sept 9? I will be there, but I don't think the boat will be. Working on some trailer repairs. I had to take the boat off to do them. If I find the disk I'll take it with me on the 9th.
