Exomos announces launch of ground-breaking high speed Air Bo

Exomos, leading regional manufacturer of state of the art submersibles and innovative water craft, has formally launched its one of a kind TURBO JET 600 Airboat with reversing capability.

The high speed shallow water craft is powered by a.....

A couple of very uninformed, early observations:

1.) Evidently a company like Exomos sees enough value in the concept of an airboat to spend what is probably at least a couple of million on the developement of one. That's good.

2.) The article says that the craft incorporates a Turbojet engine. Obviously they are planning to operate this thing somewhere besides the State of Florida ( how many Db did you say that thing makes?), in the vicinity of a marina or boat ramp, or in any area where drought conditions present a fire hazard. That's not good.

3.) The size of the thing tells me that they have little if any interest in trying to sell one to anyone like you and me, or even to a tour boat operation. It's probably aimed at seismic and other exploration duties because the engine alone will cost more than the average airboat, even one with a counter-rotator. That tells me that this company has a lot of money behind them, and that might eventually make life easier for all of us in future legislation. That could be good.

We shall see ......

Turbines arent responsive enough for anything I have ever used an airboat for. They tout it for Law enforcement ! Well as anybody knows who has ever (not that any of us ever would) stuck a gator and ran, thats exatly the kind of boat you would want LE to chase you in. They would wreck the thing in the frist 30 seconds of a chase.

Outside of a tour like the picture shows or in wide deep water areas I see it as virtually useless.

It will suck diesel at a rate you can't imagine ! Turbines element is at 20,000 feet definately NOT sea level.

Another joke is reverse thrust with a transmission instead of controllable prop.

Oh well they got the money to build that thing from our inflated oil prices so its just our money being waved in our own faces by those who flaunt it.

Yup, my opinion

I agree 100%, Whitebear. The only way that a turbine would ever be functional on an airboat is when turning a $70,000 constant speed prop.
Don't even want to think about sitting there waiting for the thing to spool-up with a big hole in the water behind the transom ..... .

Its ability to access even the shallowest waters means it is ideal for relief in flooded areas, making it a low cost alternative to helicopters.'

Big bucks for something that won't run dry.............I'm sure a few goverment agencies will want one................another reason we'll need volunteer airboats that can perform & "Git' er Done like when N.O.
happens again.

Since they are spending big $$$$ on research, how about dropping them a line asking them to spend big $$$$ on reducing sound?

With the amount of money they are wasting on that thing they could successfully lobby to make it illegal to complain about an airboat and they could win !

My Airboat is available in different sizes, the one on the news is the biggest one, 35 Ft long, both propulsion is available, Chevrolet engine or jet engine.
Jet engine burns diesel, huge advantage, gasoline is a hazard, and is actually making less noise than the chevy.
Carbon fiber hull and ducted fan a far better solution to keep noise, cargo and passengers away from engine and blades.
consumption is 20 % higher than the chevy but you get there in half the time.. above all i can go reverse with a simple mechanical gear box, much better than those variable pitch props.
I ran all types of airboats, regardless of everything it is absolute fun to run one with a jet engine.

With the above post Exomos, you showed your perspective accurately and confirmed nearly every point I made in my above post. Stop in to Central Florida sometime and Ill offer you a ride (for free) that will enlighten and educate. All the best to you. You will be amazed at the hospitality we can offer as well.

Scotty

welcome to the forum exomos !
do you have a web site?
or some better pictures / more info you can post about your boats?

Scotty, thank you for your hospitality and your free ride, however i dont need it, i have a house and live in Stuart Florida for 4 years. i do have an extensive experience in airboats piston engines, i would like to invite you to share your experience as well with turbine engines since you seem to know more than me about them, so you did not know that the big pumps that dried out New Orleans (sea level) after Katrina are powered by turbine engines, as of hospitality i invite you here in dubai, trust me i already compared and made my choice.
The investment to develop my turbine engine airboat was very low, the cost of 3 airboats,i am not crazy, a businessman, i also developed a new construction technic that allows me to produce an air boat in 2 weeks !!! i appreciate your comments that do little anyways due to the number of orders i already received.
Thank you croc for your welcome note ! i will send more pics

Exomos Id love to take a ride on it with you either in Stuart or in Dubai. It's not that I know more about turbines than you, I likely do not. It's that I know more about airboats than you. Yes it was turbines that powered those pumps, and turbines power other applications at sea level as well like power generation, air evacvuation, and etc.. All fixed RPM applications. Turbines were unsuccessful in both cars and trucks.

I would never try to change your mind, I, more than anything else, was thinking of the traditional uses for airboats where instant throttle up is a necessity and any lag in throttle response can be incredibly hazardous, if not down right disasterous. In open water applications similar to hovercraft I can envision it might be used however the Brittish and now Americans have both used them in hovercraft and found the fuel consumption rate to push them to the point of nonprofitablilty. Where profit is not a day to day operational motive they seem to do well in fixed RPM applications.

If you have orders, a lot of orders, have you made any deliveries yet? I'd love to go see them in use.

I'll be home in April if you will be in Stewart during that time lets enjoy some time and a meal together. On me of course :)

Scotty

i do both piston and turbine airboats, my orders come from the middle east and russia where applications are different, oil fields in area that cannot be reached by boat or by truck, helicopteres too expensive, the turbine airboat is the right solution, very powerfull, the fast response of piston engines not really needed, i can carry a lot of cargo.
also for professionals in this area it is mandatory to use diesel fuel, never heard of a diesel engine airboat
The only reason you might not see my turbine boat in the US is for maintenance, few people know how to service them and are reluctant to buy them.
Yet turbines are great, i just presented my new powerboat at the Dubai Boat show , a monster of 10 tons, 54 ft, trimaran powered by 2 x 1,400HP turbines, so small that it is making my trimaran the fastest one in the world at 100mph ! , what a ride!
There is also a Sheikh here who rides a bike powered by a 150HP turbine to speed up to 250mph, i beleive Jay Leno has one too. turbines are great!
However i will sell my airboat, ducted fan and carbon fiber hull, in the US with the chevy engine.

Now theres a common point of reference, were both right ! I knew if I followed up there would be a common ground for understanding. You have offered a solution that has plagued those people since drilling for oil began. Perfect application.

We Americans do tend to think were the center of the world and seldome realize much happens were not aware of. We all do need to step back (myself included) at times and listen more than we talk.

In the US the drilling is not so widely separated or uncluttered. Recip engined ariboats are used here with great success.

I'm glad I didn't let this thread die with a single comment. Now even more than before I would seriously like to see the boat and as I said I'll be in Florida in April or will be back in Qatar in May. I'd love to come over to see the boat and meet you there as well. With my work schedule it will take a little planning but it certainly is possible.

I'm also glad you didn't let the thread die with a single comment.
