FAA Meeting

Dakota

Well-known member
-Meeting called to order
-Secretary Report read and accepted with new changes
-Treasurers report read with amendments and accepted
-FAA website-would like participation from other clubs such as pictures and input. Also if you see something missing on the site or something misspelled please contact the webmaster and not the officers as it will take longer to get there.
-Marsh Rider update-they gave the FAA their cut of the first profits. Deadline for next issue is November 1.
-Talked about the airboat show and how it was a success. We have set a tentative date for the first Saturday in October.
-Old Business
-Talked about adding a dissolution cause to the by-laws. Was read and will be voted on at the next meeting
-Byron talked about the Alligator Hunt with the legislators and how it was a great success.
-Talked about the raffle boat and how we need to all thank the sponsors of the airboat.
-Bob talked about the Sante Fe River cleanup and said the newspaper did not report right when they said their was trash all over the place. We have club members there who reported to us that there was no trash there.
-Talked about the CAT program and whether or not it is a good thing. It was tabled.
-Danny talked about what is going on around the Kissimmee chain of lakes and how we need to keep an eye on this. This could precedent up for other counties.
-Jerry talked about what was going on in Alachua and how they are trying to come up with more and more laws that they do not enforce. He said they do not need anymore laws on the books.
-Bonnie sent a report on what she has been doing in Tallahassee. If you would like to see the report, go to http://www.floridaairboat.org.
New Business
-Dave and Charity reported on the Bud Marquis ride that AAOF and southernairboat are putting together. We reported on who Bud Marquis was and how everyone in that room should donate to the cause.
-Bishop talked about what is going on at Holiday Park. He said in 2011 the county is supposed to take it over but it may be sooner depending on the conditions there.
-Bishop talked about the legislative day and how it had been canceled. There is nothing set for right now.
-Charity talked about the Big Gator Shootout, where it will be held and that we all need to be there to make this thing a success.
-Vickie C from the Lake County Club came in and told us about a new system that you can use in your clubs. It will automatically dial the numbers and remind them of upcoming event or meetings with your club. She said they used the system there a couple of times and noticed an increase in the participation. It sounds like a good thing.

Great report Charity. It was a good meeting.

One thing that was mentioned in the exec meeting that I thought was going to be discussed at the whole meeting was about the formation of committees for the October 2008 Airboat show.

I think it was agreed upon to go with the first Saturday in October with this. And to possibly include an Autumn swap meet to compliment USAA's spring swap meet at GTO.

Maybe it was the time clock that kept that from being discussed.... but for those interested - Start thinking how you want to help out with the next show.... No doubt at the next FAA meeting - committees will be set up. Just a little advance tip for anyone interested in helping.

There was not any major votes this meeting other than the leadership elections, and as the second delegate for southern airboat, I voted to add Bob Polumbo to the FAA executive committee. (among others) His name was not on the ballot, but nominated "last minute" at the meeting. I voted for him because of his connections with the SCAC and the large SCAC presence here on S/A. I believe Dakota did the same.

Looking forward to the next year of the FAA. The group is settling into a great balance. More and more of the member clubs and groups are well represented in the leadership.

The next meeting is to be held in the melbourne area with a ride afterwards? Sounds good to me! What is the date for the next meeting? I missed that as the meeting was closing.

This was a very good move. I hope he is actively engaged in the decision making process.

Cowboy - it was a long list - If Dakota is having to re-type it it may be the delay for getting it posted. Or she may be waiting for an electronic version in email or something.
I'd like to see it too.... my wife got a paper copy but I don't go snooping thru her stuff. ;) The paper copy of Bonnie's report was several pages long.

When Bob read it, it listed a bunch (150 or more?) of laws that were out there that touched IN SOME WAY airboating that Bonnie has asked the lawmakers to shut down. Some were general boating or access laws while others were laws that specifically mentioned airboats.

I heard Dustin mention the raw number of bills that will be before the legislature the next session - I'd like to find that number because I forgot it due to all the other info flying about that day. It did impress me as a large number of bills the lawmakers were looking at! We don't want any of them to be against airboats - and there was one Bonnie helped stop that did not mention airboats at all - but referred to "Mechanical sound producing machines on the waterways" or something to that effect. Sneaky.

Good job Bonnie.

The Bill originated from the Orange County Sheriff's office. It's intention was to stop the loud, foul rap coming from stereos. The wording could have affected us. Lee C found the bill & brought it to Bonnie's attention.

The wording could also have been changed in the future to affect us.
As Bonnie noted in her report.

Thanks to Lee Chamberlin for bringing it to Bonnie's attention.
Thanks to Bonnie for doing something about it.

Thanks to the Orange County Sheriff's Office for trying to stop the loud, foul rap music! :pukeright: :D

Wording CAN hurt us & needs to be watched. That's why big $$$ is being spent, correct?

The OCSO deputy who wrote the Bill was not interested in any airboat issues. His only concerns is the multitude of complaints they receive from folks on Orlando's many waterways where kids are blasting Rap Cr*p out on their stereos.
Another form of similar wording may be in the works for 2008. It would be nice to get the wording right to reduce the foul rap & stay away from airboat sound. That would make us, OCSO & many parents happy.

 Anyone else see this as an opportunity...unless you like playing loud, foul rap music while airboating? Coming to the aid of this issue while avoiding the wrath of a blanket ordinance/state law has merit. The intent of this bill has nothing to do with airboats but the proactive approach from airboaters can prevent misinterpretation in the future.

Of course it is.

The problem is in the wording. Even when you spend big $$$ on lawyers, you never know what the wording will really mean or how it will be interpreted.
I've said this before on issues that won't go away. Better to be at the table & have a say than to have something rammed through that you have little or no say.

Gatorstick I'm not trying to take away from your argument but in my many experiences with politicians, lawmakers, and the "powers that be" the final wording always differs from what is communicated from those that try so hard to get it right. The final wording is what makes or breaks many a contribution to future campaign efforts. Ask for the sky and settle for the horizon, if you're lucky, but politicians have many more constituents to satisfy than those participating in our humble cause. Look back at what the FAA was trying to accomplish when you were Pres. and examine the verbage change that took place at the last minute to satisfy all those concerned. I know you're well aware of this and I also know that you realize the value of personal relationships with these same elected officials. The midnight hour certainly challenges the best of relationships. There are quite a few individuals that work behind the scenes to protect what we all cherish and strive to preserve. These individuals certainly do not expect or want public recognition. Politics is like a chess game....may the best player win!

Dotson,
100% correct. No argument here with your assessment.

My statement though still stands. If you're not in the game you forfeit. The issues are not going away, nor are our opponents & detractors. You bring your best people & game plan to the table. Win some, tie some, lose some. I have confidence we have the ability to do much better than we have done in the past. Been there, done that.

The question is are we willing to change, openly & honestly find talent, discuss solutions, select our fights and earn respect with our fellow sportsmen & citizens. It's on these topics that I substantially differ with a select group of activists as I do not see the methods & people involved as the "A" team nor the results produced.

Questions go unanswered and are ridiculed for being asked instead of being debated, supported or rebuked via pros and cons. Strategies in dire need of attention are not addressed. Forward thinking ideas & concepts are not discussed or pursued and are attacked. Votes are remembered, recanted & used against the voter.......Instead, same old plan, same old result with the same old losses.

I don't post here to butt heads with the same old active SA.com members. I post hoping the questions will stimulate thinking, ideas, concepts & solutions and maybe bring more folks out into activity. While it's not obvious this is happening from the posts, I'm well aware that many read the site, don't post but are thinking of the questions posed and occasionally, step forward with either a challenge to address the question or a new idea towards it. (Galileo was condemned for speaking the truth. Socrates too. Today, so are conservatives)

We have the same situation in mass media as politics. You talk to a reporter & you have no control over the outcome. I was told years ago to avoid the media (past airboat activists) as they will twist, lie and do anything to kill us. Well, maybe it had more to do with the SUBSTANCE/MESSAGE the media was presented AND the folks and activities presented to the media than a basic desire to slam us. Goes back to having a well conceived plan with knowledgeable people. For positive press, you MUST control the environment, selecting the best people, put your best foot forward and present a predetermined message. The results that have been generated the last few years (prior to 2007) speak for themselves. However, this approach does exclude some within our ranks & it irks them to no end.........

Back to topic.............ain't going away so I stand by it's better to be involved not certain of any outcome. Otherwise, the results are VERY predictable.............

It's been my experience that no matter how much persistance, the media always errs from what the true facts are. I've had more than one journalist comment that "to err is human, to err daily is journalism". My profession is highlighted daily in the local, state, and national news and it has always proven best to stay out of the media with the exception of carefully crafted news releases. Even those tend to backfire on occasion. We are the minority so we take what we can get and continue to beg for what we want. My airboating environment is relatively peaceful but I continue fighting for those under fire.

kinda like the time me an you when to defend are airboating rights in highlands co just to find out it was more of a subdivision land owners desspute than a airboat noise issue like are locale paper tryed to make every one believethats when we taked to the co administrator an found out there was not a problem

Sorry for the mix up guys. I had everything entered in and my computer froze. I have not had a chance to enter the information into the website but I will make sure it is done tonight. The thread on http://www.floridaairboat.org will read Legislative update. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I can't find thepost but Isaw on one of them some mention of making sure traditional uses on fl acquistion lands or something of that nature
If someone has the time epecially up there in central and North Fl. try and get the counties and local towns to pass resolutions recognizing the traditional and cultural uses with airboats. It take a lot of time but I have been able to get Monroe County to recognize the Gladesman Folk Cultura and our traditinal uses with airboats bugies and other activities in the Big Cypress I tried the same with Broward but have not been able to accomplish it yet I was able to get the Township of SW Ranches in Broward County to recognize the Glademanculture and traditional uses because Broward County is trying to turn Everglades Holiday Park into a regular countypark which will could in the loss of traditional 24 hour a day7 day a week year long access at the last meeting even after we had stressed we needed the fulltrack and airboat access to the south it was not included in their prliminary plans so we are having to keep working on that still but it might be a good idea before any further loss of access occurs start getting local town and county resolutions recogizing your tradition uses. I can email folks copies of the two I have helped get passed if you are interested my email is looprd@aol.com please put in the subject request for glademan resolution so I know its not spam or junk mail
