I SAW A PICTURE OF AN AIRBOAT THAT WAS SAID TO BE CLOCKED AT 72+ IT WAS SAID TO BE THE FASTESTED AROUND BUT CANNOT FIND THE PICTURE, ANYWAY DOES ANYONE KNOW THE TYPE OF BOAT AND ENGINE SIZE. THANKS KEN

That’s defiantly not the fastest boat. I’ve clocked several (ride boats) over 85MPH With a K-ban radar gun. Several boats I know that run the marsh will run 80MPH plus in 400Ft. I will try to link up a video of a ride boat that does 86MPH in 400 feet. Cracker or Rick I will need your help on this one I’m not very computer literate.

the caption said fastest on the Platte. It is a home built flat bottom airboat in Fremont, Nebraska. The boat is 16 x 8 with a 502 chevy. The website is http://www.angelfire.com/ne/swheelo/airboat.html
This guy builds most of the engines on for the airboats in this area. He has run a number of engines on his boat. That picture and caption are almost 4 years old and he has been faster since. The difference between this boat and the boats in florida is the driver sits right behind the front deck and is not up by the engine. I guess its almost like the race boats out there. He uses this boat for running set lines, and crusing. Also with the design of this boat I'm sure it isn't a very light boat.

Paul Dixon builds a 14ft Seminole "Ride" Pleasure, whatever you wanna call it. 0540 super charge, with 2 people it was clocked at 104.2 mph.!!! Man was it awsum.I was there to see it happen. Now understand that was "perfect" conditions, meaning weather and skinny water. But I also saw 2 of his boats with super chargers on them race weekend before last at Cypress and they were like a streak of lightening.I never seen a boat go so fast.If you want a really nice built boat and fast at the same time ,check him out.I did.His normal 0540 is no slouch either.

Just what hull is best for flatout speed on the water?

I don"t mean timed or measured acceleration but topin stuff.

We've heard all sorts of stories & I guess the eng/prop mounting changes some things over say an outboard but 80+ is some doing for a flat bottom.

Thanx, Gben

This is another thing that get’s debated allot. Me and about 90% of airboat racers insist on a step hull. The other 10% like the lightest and smallest flat bottom hulls. You know the ones that flip at least once a year. What’s ironic is the step hulls are safer and less likely to fly than a traditional hull. This technology came from the APBA boats, the offshore guy’s have been running step hulls for decades they actually utilize three or four steps in the bigger boats. The way it works is a 4 or so step about 4 to 5 feet from the nose of the hull. This step creates an air pocket between the hull and water. Air has a much lower drag coefficient than water so the hull run’s with less drag. It’s like an air hockey game turn off the air and the puck doesn’t move fast but with the air on it moves very fast. I have been in several boats the will make a GPS show 90 to 100MPH and these boats felt safer than a traditional boat at 65MPH. It is amazing how well this step works my wife has ran my old step boat over 85MPH but wouldn’t run my deck over faster than 45MPH. There is one guy who with out a doubt is building the highest quality step hull out there his Carbon Fiber and Composite hulls weigh less than 150LBs.

Thanx Thunder, we're gettin there :) :)

I never did take the time needed to get my Seaplane rating along the way but have been fortunate in spending some time with both float planes & amphibians.

In just abt every one of these flights I could never get over how the feeling was when reaching the step speed. The angle of attack is reduced & it feels like someone finally opened up the throttle when max power was there all the time.

Now let's see here, wonder where we can find an old set of these floats? Oops, no dry running in that scheme. :( Wheels? Wide tires? 4x4?

Thnx agn, Gben

Oh yes, WING?

Hello,
I've had my airboat up to 93.3 mph on the GPS. I have some pictures on this site. Also, I have some videos of it going 75 on up to 93.3 MPH on YouTube. Just go on YouTube and search for "Airboating in Oregon", or "airboat 93.3" should get you there. I built this boat in 1993 and had a Franklin 80 HP engine on it up until last winter when I put a Lycoming o-360 180 HP on it. Most of the videos on YouTube are with the old Franklin on it, but I have put on a few with the O-360 Lycoming on it.
Thanks, Jim Backstrand
