FL Volunteers Donated 4.7 MILLION Hours in Hurricane Relief
Sun, 25 Dec 2005 01:12:42 -0000
Volunteer Florida Partners and Friends,
On Friday, December 16, Lt. Governor Toni Jennings announced the results of the hard work of volunteers and in-kind donations related to this Summer's hurricanes in Florida. She graciously thanked the volunteers at a gathering of voluntary agencies at the Daily Bread Food Bank in north Miami-Dade. Several Commissioners and many key players from the leading voluntary agencies attended the event.
It was another record year of hurricanes in the Southeast U.S. and another banner year of dedication from voluntary agencies and their volunteers. Here are the staggering numbers to date in Florida for 2005:
112,646 volunteers worked 4.7 million hours
5.8 million meals were prepared and served by volunteers
7.9 million bottles of water and 256,988 bags of ice were donated and distributed
14,681 tarps were either provided or actually placed on homes by volunteers
The value of donated goods = $22.6 Million
The value of volunteer time = $83 Million
The total contribution to date of goods and volunteers = $105.6 Million!!!
We at Volunteer Florida are proud to be working alongside countless voluntary agencies to meet the needs of victims during times of disasters. We'll spend this Winter and Spring discussing areas of improvement and even closer partnerships as we prepare for another predictably busy hurricane season in 2006. We'll also continue to encourage Floridians to become involved with a relief agency or community or faith-based organization and get trained to assist next Summer.
When asked why Florida has such a strong outpouring of support from volunteers and an obvious system that works during disasters, respond that it's because "we are one team which works together hand in hand, community by community to meet the needs of citizens". It sounds simple, but it's the real secret to everyone's success.
There's more work to do and improvements to be made each and every time, and we'll continue to keep working hard to do just that improve and respond even better next year! We're grateful to all of the voluntary agencies and their volunteers for the dedication they have each day!
Thank you!
