Residents, visitors object to makeover of Everglades Holiday Park
By Kathleen Kernicky | South Florida Sun-Sentinel
October 2, 2007
It is a place unfettered by time and development.
Generations of families fish and hunt in the wilderness. Tourists come here for a glimpse of old Florida that is rapidly disappearing.
Everglades Holiday Park, west of U.S. 27 at the end of Griffin Road, is home to a stunning array of birds and wildlife. It's famous for its bass fishing, alligator-wrestling shows and airboat rides through the swamp.
But now Broward County wants to make it over, spruce up its rustic exterior and expand its "opportunities" for public recreation. That could include anything from hot-air balloon rides to bike and equestrian trails. Or, an Everglades museum; an amphitheater for cultural and environmental shows; an observation tower or boardwalks for photography and wildlife viewing.
