I was very disappointed at Fla. sportsman this month printing the article that the uninformed individual wrote about airboats and the speed of sound that our props go. This is why the country is in the shape itis in today because they run their mouth and not knowing what they are talking about.

h_maddox,
More importantly and to examplify your observation take notice of the last sentence of the last paragraph . . .
"The FWC is currently developing guidelines for an Airboater's Code of Ethics that could greatly reduce the conflict between airboaters and the public."
It is obvious that the writer did not do his/her homework.
The Airboater's Code of Ethics was ratified by the Florida Airboat Association during its January 2004 quarterly meeting and was published in the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's boating safety manual "How to Boat Smart" Version-G, first published in May 2004, page 61.
Also, the Airboater's Code of Ethics can be found on the Florida Airboat Association website at: www.flairboat.com
May be someone should notify The Florida Sportsman.

I haven't looked at the FAA website for awhile. Man! Is it a mess! A lot of the links lead to empty pages, and many lead to "error 404 not found" dead links. The Blog part is very good reading, a good chronicle of recent events. But overall, it looks like a bomb went off inside the website. The FAA has definitely ourgrown it's web presence.

Do you guys want some help with that? I'm willing and able in the HTML department. Although, that's probably how it got to the shape it's in now: one person made the site, another person modified it, and yet another person modified it further until it no longer fits the framework which is supposed to hold it. No offense, it happens all the time. The trick is to build a framework that has room for growth. Whoever is in charge of that "thing" :p let me know if you need my help.

I could not find the code of ethics on the FAA website. After some digging there, I did (by chance) happen to see a link to the code of ethics on the citrus county club's website.

here is the Airboater's Code Of Ethics:

1. I will respect the rights of all users of the recreational waterways of the State of Florida, on public waters and on adjacent private property.

2. I will be considerate and courteous at public vessel launch ramps and docks.  In an effort not to delay others, I will launch and retrieve my vessel promptly.

3. I will always operate at a safe speed in posted “No Wake zones.

4. When approaching the shoreline, I will be especially aware of swimmers and other water vessels near the shoreline.

5. I realize that my vessel’s equipment, ability, weather conditions, and especially other vessel traffic should determine my vessel speed.

6. In case of an emergency, I will volunteer assistance.

7. I am aware that my vessel creates air propeller wash and will use idle speed near the shoreline and in close proximity to boat launch ramps.

8. I will ensure that all passengers in my vessel are equipped with safety equipment, including life vests, ear protection, eye protection, and required safety equipment.

9. I will avoid unnecessary disturbance of wildlife and will not enter posted “No Trespass areas.

10. I will pay close attention to the engine sound levels that my vessel may create and be aware of how others on vessels and on the shoreline will react to it.

11. I will not litter and will bring back all trash.  I will be careful in handling my fuel.

12. I will not interfere with or harass others.  I realize that people will judge all airboaters by my individual actions.

That last one is a very profound statement. It ought to be tatooed to the inside of some airboaters eyelids so they can learn it while they are passed out drunk! LOL

I looked briefly for the article online. I found nothing. If it's not online, getting a scan of it is a good idea Faron. I'm also going to see if I can find one on a news stand. But have a busy day on the books today. I have not seen many places here in town where they have it.

I don't want to offend or step on any toes if someone is already doing it, but if not, I nominate Mood for Webmaster of the FAA site. Mood you may want to email Phil Walters, 'gatorstick", I know he reads this site but I don't know how often he gets to it. I am sure he, as we all do, would appreciate the help. Thanks for stepping up to the plate and offering your services.

I could not find the code of ethics on the FAA website.

You might try the following:
http://flairboat.com/airboater_code_of_ethics.htm

It works everytime I try it.

As a clarification, the "code" was drafted by FAA in 2004 as Waterlizard stated. The FAA original version of the "code" is on the FAA site. After it was given to FWC, they rewrote it slightly. That version was printed in the boating safety handbook. Citrus County Airboat Alliance took it from there and put it on our website and FWC now links to our (CCAA) website! The differences are small.

Now Mood, I know your mom told you about "people in glass houses "....
Waterlizard is the one who is maintaining the FAA website and yes, you are correct, he inherited a site that was started and left and started and so on. He is doing what he can with what he's got. You know that feeling. Robert (Waterlizard) is doing a GREAT job and I THANK him for his efforts. Remember, we are all VOLLUNTERS and not everybody is as proficient as you in the computer dept.

As for the FL. Sportsman article, I haven't seen it yet but I'll get a copy and reply to the EDITOR. Thanks h-maddox for bringing this to our attention.

Okay SwampJet, now that you have let the cat out of the bag as to who manages the FAA website, please allow me to make a statement or two.
Yuppers, you are absolutely right about me inheriting the website and the task of transferring it from one format to another and attempting to maintain its integrity.
The website was originated way back in 2002. That was a century ago in cyber time. Much technology has changed since then.
Prior to my taking over the website it sat idol for a long, long time. In taking over the site, the format had to be changed entirely to accommodate web servers.
Taking into consideration the original creator had spent considerable time in site development and creating an unique FAA personality, I did not want to offend the creator by totally monopolizing the site and trashing all of his/her work. Therefore some of the old was incorporated into some of the new.
The critics are absolutely correct, the site has outgrown itself and the layout is less than ideally functional. It can be dramatically updated, but in doing so, it will loose much its historical identity.
The blog is the newest addition to the site. It has not been that long since blogging was even available, at least not with the web host that the FAA uses.
One day I may take the time to do a total website overhaul. When I do, I hope that the original creator is not offended by the makeover.
As always, I will continue to add information to the FAA site as it comes to me and keep it as up to date as possible.
That is my story and I am sticking to it.

WaterLizard, you didn't even have to explain ..... Thank You for your work. The FAA's safety program is getting ready to Kick Butt next year under your direction. Not too bad for an ol' Volunteer !!

All too often I think, those who subscribe to this site think that the FAA folks must surely be getting paid for what they do. Nada. Nothing. Not one Peso. Not even gas mileage to the countless meetings they attend over the course of a year. They do it because they believe in the future of airboating, and in the inherent right of all of us to be able to enjoy the wild places in this amazing, beautiful place we call Florida.

Waterlizard, it's a good story and I'll back you up!
There will be a time to do a "makeover" of the FAA site, but right now there are bigger bears to hunt. Besides, It has already evolved faster than some people.
Like I said, Your doing a Great job. Thats MY story and I'm sticking too it!!

As I said, didn't want to offend anyone. So additional thanks to Lizard for stepping up to the plate even when we didn't know there was a need. Just think, if all our elected and PAID politicians put the needs of others first like the many volunteers on this site, the FAA, and many others... what a wonderful world it would be.

Echos of all the thanks from here.

Judging from the tone of a reply or two some thought I was making an attack, and must have missed the fact that I'm volunteering. I don't know anyone who does not know all FAA officers are volunteers. We can all thump chests and pat backs, or ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING. I'm making myself available to help, and all you have to do is contact me, and I believe both Gatorstick & Swampjet know my phone number. Sometimes it seems there is a lot of talk and not much do. I'm ready to do.

Yeah, volunteers. A heartfelt thanks. Moving right along, now let's get something done.

The links that were not working this morning (Events, Legal, etc.) are working now. There may have been a web delivery problem, because I see where the rest of the page loaded and the "ethics frog" now shows, albiet about 2 feet down the page below a large blank area.

The site is good but needs some tweeking. The theme can be maintained. I have the skills to help, and say again that if you want a volunteer, there is one typing this message. I don't want to do it by myself, but want to work with someone else, and it looks like waterlizad is it. Call when you are ready to play with it. Just letting you know that I saw a need and am volunteering.

matt.

Can someone post the text of the article at hand. I'm a Florida Sportsman forum member and I would love to debate this on there own site. I surf there home page and found nothing. I stop getting the mag. after I moved out of my house due to the Hurricanes of last year, I Was going to renew it once I moved back in but this could change my mind......
