Florida Youth Hunter Education Challenge
Whether you are a youth under the age of 18, an adult with a desire to contribute time to your community, or a member of an organization or business looking for a youth-oriented project, if you have an interest in hunting and the outdoors, Florida’s Youth Hunter Education Challenge is an opportunity you don't want to miss!
We will need some adult supervision on March 22. We are planning to host 25 youth competitors which will be broken up into eight classes going at the same time, timing is everything. I know that it’s hunting season but we need your help please give one day to make this a success.
The Florida Youth Hunter Education Challenge (FLYHEC) is a program developed exclusively for state-administered hunter safety course graduates. At first glance, this program looks like a shooting competition. Given the competitive edge, that can be part of the experience, but it goes a great deal further than that. The program teaches the participants about safety, shooting, and the outdoors through eight disciplines or challenges: Archery, Muzzleloading, Shotgun, Small-bore or Light Rifle, Responsibility Exam, Safety Trail, Orienteering Skills and Wildlife Identification Challenge.
The hunter safety trail and hunter responsibility exam inspire participants to learn more about ethics, conservation, and being good sportsmen; other events like wildlife identification and the orienteering course allow the participant to gain knowledge and real outdoor skills. The shooting events promote marksmanship and, most importantly, safety.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission & Florida Sportsmen Conservation Association will be conducting Youth Hunter Education Challenge events on Saturday, March 22, 2008. The first event will be Open for youth individuals to qualify for the Regional Competition. The Regional Competition will be held in April, and will include the best shooters from Region 5, which will move-on to the Florida State Tournament, held in Ocala on May 3 & 4.
This competition is for young hunters 14 to 18 years old. Like all other FWC activities, the challenge is free. Firearms, including youth and adult model .22 rifles, 12 gauge shotguns, muzzleloaders and ammo are provided by the Florida Fish and Wildlie Conservation Commission. Youngsters can also bring their own approved rifle or shotgun, and should bring their own archery equipment (compound and recurve bows are allowed). See the FWC's YHEC website at MyFWC.com/YHEC for details.
Participants age 15 through 18 years of age on or before August 1 may enter in the Senior Division. This is an opportunity to get kids involved in hunting and the shooting sports. Don't miss this chance. Call now to enroll (561) 795-1375 ask for Bishop
