Fogs

Noticed here lately that the frog situation is getting pretty spotty. was wondering how the rest of uins were doing .cntry and I have been hitin it pretty hard the last few weeks and while it has been slim pickins we have managed to restock our supply mostly with medium and a few large frogs. I know the frogs are there how ever they have been very bashful about coming out to greet us, they seem to run and hide at first sight of us.
Like the other night we pulled up to a pond on the side of state road 40 ,we sat and listened for a few minutes and were quite pleased at the sound of frogs calling to one another. cntry felt that the pond waranted further investigation so we droped his boat off on the right of way and after waiting for several cars to pass we blow into the pond.As we entered the pond I could see in the beam of my light frogs jumping from pad to pad just knowing we had hit the jackpot .I scrambled for my gig and jumped up on cntry's extra wide deck ready for action.Well after about thirty minutes and six frogs we left the pond for the trailer and I might add a little deprest .I know for sure they didn't here us coming cause cntry's boat is un usualy quiet. Any insights would be apreciated.

Stan, I don't know much about frogging. However, over the last 3 wks while gator hunting many have caught my eye.

Last wk I started a new tread on frogging. Not a lot of info was brought forward but a little.

On the last full moon to 3/4 moon the frog where jusping out of the water everytime we would hit them with the light. They looked to be 9 to 10 inches in mid air. This was out on one St Johns river between SR46 and Hwy 50, the puzzle lake area. The frogs were sitting at the cow pasture edge and the river.

We had a q beam to shine and they would just jump when the light hit them. 100's and 100's of them. Sounded like baseballs hitting the water.

Wew were just drifting in a kicker boat with the current. Some even jumped in the boat.

I just picked up a ultra lite 50W. Have a cheap gig. Just have not made it back out to the river.

I hear you are the man when it comes to frogging!!!

Tell us how it is done and what to do.

How far are you from east orlando?

thanks for the comint ,however cntry is the frog Knight I'm just the squire, anyhow during the full of the moon is the worst time to try to frog they just won't stand still some say that you won't to gig on the minor of the moon ,me the darker the better.I look for good cover such as hydrilla and thick grass, lily pads by them selves dont attract to many frogs, water lettuce over elodea or hydrilla does good, water hyacinths is realy hard to gig out of ,cant' see there eyes ,going back over covered water does real well usualy producing more frogs the second time around. We have stoped and waited for the frogs to come up at times .Seems like frogs have there favorite time that they feel like being active. I preffer the small to medium frogs for being more tender and flavor full also upon skinning the frog you will notice a big differance in the meat color depending on were you got em. lake water they tend to be a whiter meat compared to ponds which are darker with black veins running through the legs. Far as equipment goes I prefer the mobley's gig on a two piece gig to keep the tines from splaying out budda man out of scramble town afixes a quarter between them on wraps a little tape around them which works real good. I use a ultra light 50 watter seems the dimmer the lite the the better you can see there eyes.cntry modified a cooler into a frog chute which works real well specialy when there is ice added to the mix he should markett them cause it does work nice. HAPPY FROGGIN

Deepsea - Stan is up towards northern Volusia county - But STAN!!!!!! If you want to talk cntry into heading over this way, that part of the St. Johns is my home town!

Come on down!!!! We'll go out and see about this baseball slappin' on the water.

Deepsea - you could meet us at the ramp - Jolly gator, Loughmans or Hwy 50 are good places to launch.

I just rode that area again last Friday, and the water is up and the cover is there. I took my 81 year old dad out there on a joy ride. :D

How we doin' on that moon phase? This coming weekend it'll be a week yet till the full moon.... not as dark as you may like it, but it could be brighter.

Stan? Are you up for a little night fun like that? Maybe this weekend? Sooner? I got a spare gig and my own ultra-light that I've modified just a little.

Let's get some frogs!!!!

I want to sit with you (stan) and chat about our wedding plans.... Laura and I would like to ask you to cook some of our gator meat for the wedding guests. And some froglegs too no doubt! Let's talk.

but more than that - Let's frog!

Went giging a couple weeks ago and took a buddy we got 173 frogs all of them 10 to 14 inches in an hour and a half in west orange county.

Been so long since I been frogging, I forgot what they looked like!

Them " FOGS " are a b_ _ ch when they set in at night and you can't find your way back in. OOPS!, I thought this thread was about something else.

LOL I noticed that. Bad spellers of the world untie!

Cowboy - Don't forget that just a few hours ride north of you, a couple miles off I-95 there are some boat ramps... Camp Holly, Lone Cabbage, Hwy 50 public ramp, & Loughman Lodge. Easy to get to from down south. I-95 all the way, baby.

It's a lot like ridin' the glades in the fact that you can go for miles in one direction and keep going. And instead of passin' camps and stuff... every 15 or 20 miles there is a bar/restaurant to stop at.... with waitresses!!!

You are more than welcome to join us up in these parts any day or "foggin" night.

And there is that November 18th wedding up here I hope you are up for some riding on that day! Bring yer skunk ape too.

matt.

That's "foggin" funny mood. Iam anxiously awaiting one of cowboys headlights so i can load up on some frogs

I am also looking forward to the upcoming nuptials at paw paws.

congrats

1/4 moon, Whasssss up. Went by DB and picked up on the gig head and pole.

Had to take the gig head apart to see how it was made. For awhile I wish I had not. Sometimes I wish I had little bitty sandwhich clamps.

G0550, that lite on it's way? DSD

Scotty, the gig heads are 19.99 plus tax. Their poles are about the same price.

DSD the light is on it's way. When are you going to try that gig out? Say hello to Melvin.

Dave

I hope to go this weekend. Just have to hook up with my brother (Mark)

Heck, Maybe try to see what melvin is up to.

Dave, if you have any gator tags left and want a big one and would like to do it out of a kicker Boat let me know. There are lot of good ones in the puzzle lake region and you can creep up on them with a kicker boat on the drift to snatch them. Then its cross bow or harpoon time.

We did rather well with the kicker boat and we picked them out. 11 ft 2 inches was the just about as good as Melvin did on the run and gun.

look out frogs, hear we come.
Would like to see that new light.
DSD

DSD, Might take you up on that. I have never tried the stealth approach but it makes sense. Especially with the water being up. Any room for my agents, Hatmaker and Skeeter?

Dave

I checked out 2 holes where there has always been frogs, its on some private county fenced property that I have permission to get on. I have always gotten enough for a decent mess for me and the miss's,,I didn't see one frog. Nice small holes to wade around and pick up some fresh legs, not anymore. I'd give anything just about for a nice mess of fresh legs. Later, Cajun

0550,
Here's your new light.
It's pretty much done now, but I want to try something different.
Parts should be here today. If it works, youll have a better light than me!

At least for a little while.
I'll make sure you have it up there before your night ride next Friday.

Later

Cowboy, The light looks killer! And with some new mods. to boot?

Much thanks, I really appreciate it.

Dave

I tried out my Ultralight last weekend.

Man, I need a freakin eye exam. YOu don't realize how bad your vision is getting until you're trying to find something small than in the water at night. LASIK is definitely in my future

I did gig a couple real nice ones, but unfortunately, my buddy's girlfriend didn't know they could still jump out of the bag after being gigged. They must have been gigged before because they knew right how to jump out of the boat, back in the water.

I passed on most of the frogs I saw, too small

RD, If you take a chum bag [they have em', at wal- mart] and cut out the bottom then put it on your frog chute before the dive bag or croaker sack.Frogs go in but they can't jump out!
