Found my oil leak

For those who were in the chat last night I said I was lookin for an oil leak I had on my engine. Well we found it .. I switched the hoses on my vacum pump and pressurized the crankcase and the went all over the engine with soapy water lookin for bubbles. I found the stand pipe that my oil sensor mounts to was split in the threads. It was a tiny bubble that gave it away but when we went to take it out it just broke off. I almost had me a real aw poopie there. Upon inspection the pipe nipple was threaded off center and was really thin on one side and the weight of the sending unnit and the harmonics of the engine was too much for it.

I mention this because I have seen a lot of boats that have extensions for the sending units to clear the intake manifolds so if you got one keep an eye on it. I dont have one anymore, we routed the aluminum a little for clearance and did away with it. I can only imagine what would have happened if it would have broke off while I was runnin dry at 4 or 5 thousand it would have been a 5000.00 boo boo. But then I would have had to have a new bigger badder motor darn it. oh well this one is still goin.

Nice job Cntry.
It's those small things that are hardest to figure out sometimes.

Glad you got her tightened up, but I'm still gonna keep an extra quart or two in my boat with your name on 'em :p

Hey 141,

Glad you found the leak!

Who's gonna be the new skeeter fogger?!

While on the oil sending unit topic...stupid question I once again have!

Do you have a mechanical or electrical type gage and why the preference?

Thanks,

Basketcase

I have electric, because they are the marine type guages, I always ran mechanical with only copper tubing before but was convinced to give these a try .. they have worked so far for the last 3 years on this engine. I have replaced the guage once or twice but the sending unit has not failed yet.

Sorry mood no can do 8)

thanks cowboy and I got a quart for you also :)

that sounds good, just got my engine on my boat tonight and most of it hooked up should have it running tommrow and ready to run this weekend.
