Freshwater Brama Island's heritage intact

Brama Island, Fla. | Little more than an hour's drive south of Orlando - and its amusement parks, direct flights and condos - exists one of the country's largest freshwater islands.

No one knows just how large because the island has never been surveyed, but owner Cary Lightsey estimates Brama Island to be anywhere from 2,400 to 2,800 acres.

Located a few hundred yards off the southern shore of Lake Kissimmee in Osceola County, the nature refuge, with its palmettos, sand dunes and grasslands, is often accessed by airboat.

Developers lick their lips at the high-rise potential. But profit isn't everything to the family whose primary source of income is cattle, which the Lightseys have raised in Florida for six generations - seven if you count Cary Lightsey's son.

i wish the grove owners would take an outlook on life like he does. our entire town seems like it went from groves to neighborhoods in less than two years... and most of the houses are still empty! goes to show you what dollar signs can do to a small-town atmosphere.

rick i hope this thread was not created because of my post on another ,in no way was i trashin the lightsey family, worked cows for em in my teens been on the so. end of kiss all my life . i just thought 3 mil was a waste of state funds to save something they wouldnt develope any way . but what do i know , i always thought paying dairy farmers to pore out there milk so the price would stay high was stupid! 3mil an keep your stuff i say more power to the lightseys i geuss with that kind of break we all could play an work with the family .

Not at all plumcrazy...I just post news stories as I find them in this area...whether we agree or not.
