LAKE PLACID - A special account has been established at Heartland National Bank to help the family of Brittany Lea Helms, 17, who died after a car crash Friday afternoon.
Cpl. L.M. Smith Jr., with the Florida Highway Patrol reported that Helms was driving on County Road 29, about three miles north of State Road 70, at 3:50 p.m., in a 2000 Nissan four-door model, during a rain storm when she hydroplaned through standing water and lost control.
Her car slid into a deep ditch and impacted the far side of the embankment before coming to a rest. She was transported to Florida Hospital Lake Placid where she reportedly died at 5:01 p.m.
She was not wearing a seat belt, the report stated.
Her sister, Alexis J. Green, 6, was also taken to Florida Hospital, but was later transported to Tampa General Hospital, from where a hospital spokesman said on Tuesday that she had been discharged....
