Frogging

deepsea diver

Well-known member
While gator hunting on the St Johns river over the last two weeks I have noticed a large healthy populations of frogs.

I see that you do not need a lic for gigging.

While drifting down the rivers banks and shinning the Q beam at the waters edge The frogs would jump into the deeper water. Sounded like bases balls falling into the water. Mosted looked to be 9 to 10 inches in length.

How about a little info from the experts.

Very few time could you see them with the brigth Q beam sitting in the water, alway could see them in mid air.

How about sharing your techniques. Plan on taking my son out and spending some quality time with him.

Thanks in advance, DSD

I am not an expert but I did sell them for a little while. You need to get something a little dimmer than the q beam. Also I would recomend hunting the marsh. Also if you really want to learn how to hunt them you need to learn to do it on a plane. You turn the boat a little to the left and let the weight of the boat gig them. Look for eyes.

The ultra light brand headlight with the smaller light works great for frogging. They sell them at diamondback and they keep a few in stock at loughmans. If you want advice from the pro's talk to stan and cntry141.

If your just begining start off with some styrfoam cups in broad daylight in the marsh.

Everybody so far is right on about the light. You want to just light up their eyes not cook them on the bank. I like a rheostat with my frog light so I can dim it down or brighten it some according to how skittish the frogs are.

Giging on a plane is how ya fill your bag quicker but for the beginner give it a while first.

First step is learn to see frogs in the light. Theres other things sides frogs have eyes that light up. Moccasins and spiders will too. Its no fun to try to get a moccasin off your gig while the boats running.

Get ya a good light weight gig head. I make my own with fish hooks straightened out but theres some nice gig heads for sale as well. I like a bamboo pole but theres nice fiberglass ones that work fine.

Froggin is fun and ya can eat yer results.

Seems I remember ya used to have a fishing license to gig frogs, but that was a while back.

Go for it and have a ball.

Scotty

WB, Your right about the moccassins. My friend scott gigged one in lake cypress one night while we were frogging. Luckily he was able to shake it off the gig. Diamondback also sells fiberglass telescoping poles and gig heads.Check out cowboys light setup on the over head lights thread.
