Fuek injection vs Carb ?

What are your thoughts about Fuel injection vs a carb on an AC motor ? Never had fuel injection on a motor and was wondering about maintenance, parts, in the field repairs .etc.
Thanks !

FI....When they work, they work great!!! When they don't it makes you want to throw the dang thing in the water.....

I liked the reliability of my Holley on the 470 but I haven't had any problems with the FI on my 520...yet...knock on wood....

I've had friends that had problems with FI on Lycoming and they eventually switched to carbs.

Some of the real motorheads here can give you a better explanation....

Ive been told FI will run around $3000.00.I run a 930cfm Predator carb. and would recommend it to anyone. As BP says knock on wood.

With an injected motor you've gotta have a fuel/water separator, and change your fuel filter often too. The ports in injectors are tiny compared to a main jet in a carburetor, so they can't stand any contamination.

I have FI on my angle 540, every 10 hrs or so I have an injector clogg, they run off very low pressure ( some people call them dribblers) so it takes almost nothing to stop one up. I do have a good filter and a water separator but usually I get a piece of carbon almost to tiny to even see stopping one up. I think somehow it enters from the head side. I would go with the Carb.

I agree they clog...but 24psi isnt too shabby.....Charles (wondering why a carb with 5 lbs doesnt clog so easily)

The size of the orifices in the jets, Charles. Purely in theory the injectors on a 6 cyl. engine would only have to be 1/6th the size of the main jet on a similar engine that is carbureted.
In actual practice they're larger, but not a lot. olf

I do have 24lbs of fuel pressure at the rsa , but not near that at the injectors, when one clogs the fuel will just equal through the other nozzles

I had a ma4-5 on my 0470L but i had to try injection to see for myself and i can say my injection hits quicker than my old carb and runs in cooler weather better nothing to ice up and i like the response of it . but it has it's draw backs too it can be a pain a little trash in your fuel and you can go from a six cyl to a five and in my case my Friends generally are running and waiting on me to get started but not too long (to cheap for a boost pump). So if you like to tinker with your rig get injection and if you like to ride stay with a carb

p2, I love fuel injection but it does require that you pay a lot more attention to fuel contamination. Skunk gas won't cut it. olf

Ran mine for almost 3 years with no problems ,very responsive .If you let them sit for a long time the fuel tends to dry up in the injection lines and will flake up and clog the injectors .

Olf good point. one trip to the ramp on five cyl's and my buddy's reminding me of my perfectly good carb and a better filter /water separator took care of that little set back. I have had the system for two years now and still pleased with it . It just isn't as forgiving as the carb seemed to be. I bought the system used and sent it to be reworked to air boat standards, everything but the lines and i used compressed air on them. Probably were some of trash came from in the injectors
