fuel pump question

mountain man

Active member
I just replaced my fuel pump on my 220 gpu and have a question? the pump is a ac/delco carter I also have a manual pump on the motor as well. When i turn the elec pump on to start my pressure gauge is only showing 2 psi when the motor is running the gauge shows 7 psi. should i run the elec pump all the time or just at start up and let the manual pump take over? also should my elec pump keep pressure in the line at all time?

thanks

I'm not sure Mountain Man. It depends on a couple of things I quess.

If your mechanical pump will pull from your tank, then you may not need to run the electric pump all the time.

I just use mine to prime my mechanical pump if needed. If I do leave it running, it makes no diference to the mechanical fuel pump.

If your pressure guage is in your fuel line after the mechanical pump, you may not see the presure from the electric pump when it's running.
This would be if your electric pump is installed between the fuel tank, and the mechanical pump.

I'd try running it without the electric pump, and see what happens.
Not in deep water though.

I would really check what kind of flow you have with the pump shut off. We run some equipment that had mechaniclal and electric. Oil pressure bypass activated the electric goes on. Plunger type or diaphram and when we tried a carter centrifugal pump the mechanical did not do a good job of sucking enough fuel through the electric pump. :?

For what it's worth.

About 4 years ago, my mechanical fuel pump failed on my 220 GPU. At that time I didn't have a spare, and couldn't get it to work any more so I bought a cheap (around $25) Puralator universal electric pump. They offered 2 volumes of flow @7 psi, so naturally i opted for the larger volume.
I mounted it right down on the floor on one of the stringers because electric pumps like to push not pull.
Anyway, it's been there for all of those 4 years at about 50 hrs a year average use with no problems so far.(and yes, It has been wet many times)
Also, not being totaly faithful, I have a spare just like it on board at all times...MY $.02

if your boat doesn't "blow", it sucks

Thats the best signature line I have seen in I don't know how long !

It rates right up there just under Cowboys !

Them A/C Delco's are junk I have seen soo many of them fail that were new. As usually the owner would say I just bought it so I know it ain't the pump. At least twice I helped somebody who's pump went bad by stealing a A/C from another persons boat and it had the same problem with Then a buddy of mine showed up with a spare Carter we installed it and the boat ran fine. Them A/C Delco's are junk no offense but they will leave you stranded. For anything under 600HP, I strongly recommend the Carter pn# 180-P4070 4-6psi pump or the 180-P4594 6-8psi pump. Every one of these pumps I have ever installed is still operating flawlessly today. They cost $59 from Jeg's.
