GAS prices and economics

I swore since childhood I would never buy a new car! Well I did some major economics here. My wife drives on average 1050 miles a week in a vehicle that gets 15MPG. This comes to 4200 miles per month or 280 gallons a month times $3 a gallon comes to a fuel bill of $840 a month this is a old house payment. Anyway my father worked at the Cape for 35 years and drove a VW diesel Rabbit that got 51 MPG I’m shocked to find 25 years later not a single car get’s better then that. So it’s obvious the car guy’s and oil guy’s are one and the same plus the government has never really forced better MPG vehicles. Anyway back to my point I found a nice extremely safe new car with more airbags then an airboat race! It gets between 43 and 46 MPG this will burn around 97 gallons a month saving me get this $547 dollars a month in fuel the car payments will be $220 so I will save $327 per month after the payment, then take a $100 for full coverage insurance and I’m still saving $227 dollars a month. I’m shocked I can put my wife in a bran new very safe car and when it’s all done save $227 a month. With @ 0% financing. Also I’m sure the gas prices will go well beyond $3.00 a gallon within a year! With the money I save I can afford a to build a new airboat!

Congrats on the new car, I have thought about that many times as my old POS gets poor mileage but its paid for I even thought about one of those ford Hybrids or going back to the dodge diesel truck but for now I'll just keep what I have until I win the lottery

what type of car did she pick?

PS: I had a Buddy up in Ga who worked in Atlanta withe delta he bought a old VW diesel rebuilt the engine and started to drive it to work to save on the gas bill

Sniper gave me the idea and I almost bough a VW diesel but the wife loved the Nissan Sonoma and man that thing has a bunch of safety features and it gets around 43MPG. I hate buying a new car but people want only 3 or 4 thousand less for a two year old car with 50K or more miles already on it and you never know how it's treated I figure it's worth 4K to have a bran new one and pick the exact interior and color you want plus you can only get 0% rates with a new. So a bran new car in the end costs less then borrowing money for a two year old car! Plus you know me just like the sound thing I'm gonna raise the tire pressure to 60PSI maybe lower it an inch or two and run all synthetics thru pout the drive train and also take off all the unsprung weight I can and see what kind of MPG I can get!

With synthetics and a little tweeking like a K&N filter and a couple of things, I'm bettin that you can get real close to 50 mpg. out of it, Dave.

Plus, you've got a new car warranty. If something does break, they'll fix it.

the wife will be happier with the new car anyway and the $4K was worth in brownie points if nothing else. those are nice little vehicles and should last for quit some time. I would be pretty happy with 43mpg  that's about 31mpg better then I get now :(

be careful what you change does not void the warranty

Great idea, I like the part about "with the money I save I can afford to build a new airboat," Maybe I can convince the wife that I need a new vehicle too, Then I could justify two airboats. car motor and aircraft.

John I think your missing the trick here, he bought the new one for her  she gets new car he gets new airboat

I did the same thing.....sorta. Only I didn't think it through as well as Water Thunder did. I bought my wife a new Jeep so she let me get a new airboat.
The problem is that her Jeep gets less mileage than her old car and I got a gas guzzling IO-540 and a gas guzzling pickup to pull it with.

Now when I pull my boat to the lake and ride for awhile my wallets empty and I can't afford to get back home.

I never was good at math, but life's more fun that way. Beer, anyone? :D

why didnt you get a duramax ?
I just couldn't wrap my brain around an additional $7,000 when I really didn't need that much truck.

I am taking donations for the next one, though. You in? :P
