go-devil vs airboat

depends on the size of your marsh and also the condition of it. sure an airboat is more comfortable, but it'll also blow all your ducks out of that area pretty quickly. especially if its a small area, ie; less than 500 acres. they will return but if you habitually run that area, i guarantee you will see a decrease in ducks. if you can easily use a go devil i'd go with that......

Mountain man, a good many years ago we built a Jon boat whith a drive system modeled after one we'd seen being used on lakes in Louisiana.

What it involves is pretty simple, and it works like a charm. You get a foot off of an outboard motor (around 10 hp) and bolt it directly to the bottom of the boat (you'll need a good sized aluminum reinforcing plate). Above it you mount a verticle shaft aircooled 4-cycle mower-type engine. You cut off the shaft to the foot, and put a rubber impact coupling between it and the motor. You can get an electric-start motor at good prices these days, and I'd recommend one because you will then have a small alternator to power a couple of light.

Back to the bottom. Weld up a hoop over the prop, and add a couple/three reinforcing bars to it so that the foot will ride up over a log or anything else in the water without damage. Add a rudder/tiller and you're good to go.

The things will idle all day, run forever on a gallon of gas, and they're as reliable as a stone. Put an oversized muffler on it and nobody will even hear you coming.

I absalutley concur, I have three go devil and mud buddy rigs and 1 airboat we use the airboat in the back country marshes(Public access) and The mudbuddy boats on our private marshes. Calm mornings are much worse for the airboat blowing out the ducks but the main thing you must look at is terrain can a mud buddy boat get to where you want to go ie low water sand bottom or the combination and the main thing dry land crossing. Good luck and by the way our MudBuddys are much better motors than the go devil, in additition these are much cheaper than an airboat( but not nearly as much fun to operate). Calm Seas... Capt. Also look at the ProDrive outboards. I have run muddbuddy's and go devils and LOVE my PD. Look at HuntersCentral.com, Great group of Mud Motor guys and a great forum

Public hunting area here in Louisiana do not allow airboats and many private leases specifically prohibit airboat.
