Good Cam For SBC

Boz

Well-known member
Whats a good airboat cam for a Small Block Chevy? It's just a steel headed pretty stock SBC. Thanks

Boz
If you gather some info and PM Thunder or Felber, maybe one of them would help you a bit on camshaft selection. Info to gather-

What CID displacement?
What is the flow on your intake runner and what % of this will your exhaust flow?
What intake manifold you running?
What CFM carb?
What RPM you wanting to turn?
Reduction Drive or DD?
Hydraulic flat tappet, or Hydraulic roller, or solid flat tapppet, or solid roller?
Is idle quality an issue?

Your question is impossible to answer without lots of 411-

Hey Boz
What motor you putting this camshaft in. Direct drive or reduction unit?

Also, is the camshaft a hydraulic flat tappet?

What is the lobe lift lift, lobe seperation angle, and the duration @ .050 I & E ?

I sure am interested. :)

It's going in a 400 Chevy, Perormer intake, 600 Edlebrock Carb, and Reduction system. It's for my Friends boat he is putting together can't remember what the prop is but it electrically changes pitch of the prop. The cam is hyd. specs are
Adv Dur 262 268
Dur @ .050 218 224
lift .462 .477
Lobe Sep 112.0
It's a Comp # 12-236-3

All 3 of you you guru's see these #'s and what engine with a reduction this stick is going in. Why the shyness?

Boz
Something I told myself I would not do. Gettin in your business.

If you are putting this camshaft in a N/A 400cid engine with 10 to 1 static compression, and you have a 2 to 1 reduction unit, it is my opinion, your are inviting catastrophy with your Comp Cams Cam Tech chosen camshaft.
It is also my opinion this cam tech has no clue as to exhaust temps, on an airboat engine, created by excessive cylinder pressures at very low RPM's.

I would rather buy a camshaft from a airboat engine guru and have the #'s ground off, rather than take a chance on burning one down or rattling her apart!

Comp cams may have a serious quality part for sale?
You cannot talk to the guys in the back room. Kinda a shame actually- JMO-

That idea died we pulled the motor and bearings and crank looked terible. So he is gonna junk the 400 and thinking about ordering a 290hp 350 GM Crate motor. Anyone ever use one of them?

N0! I have never used this package nor the one you mention-

The size boat and ratio with this package will be very important. Bang for the buck?
Price: $2,095.95
She will put a smile on your face if the boat is not too big and you do not crowd her with timing. Propellor choice is also a key factor with a package like this.
Right up front I would suggest at least a 2.3 reduction ratio and a Stumppuller, or K-series, or Falcon series

i have that motor with a bigger cam (dont remember size of cam) but its on a 14 foot rivermaster hull with conduit riggin no poly or slick botom just the factory paint . it has a 2 blade sensenich k series prop and it honestly goes and does everything i ask it to do. dry the hill mud i havent had it stuck but once and that was operator error. if that motor isnt on to big of a boat it will be fine. my gear reduction was a 2.37 rotator.

you can spend any amount of money you want on any crate motor you want but in the long run the cost to run with the big boys is the same buy what you can afford at this time /or borrow the amount you want to go the big route and run along and have a good time $anyway you try someome will always be faster mare money :D :D
