GPS

It depends on what you want to be able to do with it. I don't have one but I have seen several with greatly varying abilities as well as costs.

I have friends who use the Garmin ETrex series in Afghanistan and Iraq. If you look in the Bass Pro or Cabelas catalogs, they do a pretty good job of listing the cababilities of each unit as well as the costs of upgrades and accessories for each.

I still like a map and compass best though :D

PS: I moved this to airboat talk and out of The NEXT RIDE area.

I chose the Lowrance unit for installation on my boat. It is guaranteed waterproof, needs no separate antenna, has internal mapping and leaves a bright purple "crumb trail" wherever you go. That color contrast sure makes getting home a sinch even in the fog or rain. Mine is mounted on my instrument panel and has a screen these old eyes can follow at a glance while on the run.

I have to agree that the Garmin units are the toughest. I've tried Magellan and it didn't last too long.

i gotta go with Garmin too. I have had 2 so far (gps12,gps76) both of them are less than $150 and very easy to use right out of the box. waypoints and landmarks are easily stored and they have software that you can buy to download the info to your computer after every trip. you'll go through batteries every 24 hours, so the car adapter is a good accessory. the GPS is a good idea , but you still need to be aware of what's around you. when its 2AM and you are 10 into a 12 pack 25 miles from the truck and you "loose the signal" or the batteries run out, you still need to find your way back.

I have a magellan and would never buy another but every few years I break it and end up upgrading to a newer model for like 50 bucks magellans maps are 10 times more than the garmins one thing important on all GPS units is the memory the more memory the more detail and area of the maps that can be download into it

We have two Garmins If you want one just for the boat then the 276 would be grate. but if you want a hand held then the 130 Garmin Rino is super with two way radio --weather chanel --- electric compos- so you do not have to be moving to get your bearing---
The best plase I have found to buy them is http://www.gpsdiscount.com.

I've had a Garmin GPSmap 76S for a couple of years. I beat that thing and it always keeps on working. It's supposed to be waterproof (and float too) but I've never had it in the water. With this unit you can also upload a variety of maps into it (topographical, street, etc) but I just use it the way it came out of the box. I've used other Garmin GPS products and found them to be easy to use and reliable.

One feature that I really like is the "man overboard" feature. With MoB you can create a waypoint instantly with by pressing the MoB button. It can be handy when you're riding new territory and need to mark a point quickly and easily while you continue to pilot the boat.

It's also got cutomizable screens so, for instance, if you wanted to display your speed, time of day and heading on your map screen you can. If you want to, you can keep the display backlit which is great at night. I'm not sure if all GPS units have a zoom in and out feature, but it's something that I use a lot. Now that I've used it, I wouldn't buy a unit that didn't have zoom.

You should look at a mounted gps, the 76 garmin has gotta be the best handheld out there, use to sell them at WM( would stand on them as a sales pitch and can do everything as the mounted units, just not enough memory, only 4 bytes). But if you want to be able to see your screen then you have got to get a mounted gps(bigger screen for us half blind people and color). I'm using a 182 garmin, got a 120 byte chip covering all of florida, one of the best things about the boat and i never get lost, just a little exspensive. Fortunately I still worked at WM when I got Mine.

I Roll, Capt Mac Jr,

Welcome to Southern Airboat!

I need to upgrade my GPS to something with the maps, (maybe Santa will help this year)!

I like that MoB feature, (could also be used when scouting and that monster buck crosses the trail in front of the boat).

Also like that "hold my beer" thang!

whatever GPS you get I highly recomend the http://www.ram-mount.com holders they make a holder for every make type and moldel of about everything they are articulating and stay put no matter how u drive and made out of cast aluminum then rubberized also I mount the little ball on everything so you can move handheld GPS from machine to machine in about 10 seconds
