Gonna do a fixed mount, what gps are you guys running, have had good experiance with? I'm fairly tired of the handheld thing. Looking for one that keeps up with my movement fairly well. I dont wanna know Im on land when Ive already hit it.\

I would like to use some sort of ram mount to attach to the grab rail.

I have been looking at the lowrance m68c that has alot of the water ways and islands already in it have not got one yet been looking at them all bigdaddy has one and loves it. i have been at the boat place and played wtih it and it looks easy to use.

I like the garmin products. Best to get one with detachable antenna. Like everything else that uses an antenna, put it as high and clear as you can and buy the best one they offer. That said they work really well right out of the box with the small antenna untill you get in heavy trees.
Good customer support.
Good little machine!

After saying all that I looked at the Garmin site....seems they have discontinued all the reasonably priced models with remote antenna capabilities.

I like the Garmins. Good stuff.

Check out bass pro shop and west marine

West marine:

GARMIN

Garmin GPS152 with External Antenna

Only $364.99 USD

Hand helds are just a good as base mounted.
I have a GPS 48 in my hand and I would not trade it for nothing.
The new color ones would be nice.

That's the one Canefan got a while back.
It's freak'in SWEET!

My basic black model does just fine, but the color one he got is BTTB.

got a garman 76c handheld- trying to get used to it, went out the other night and dont ask me where either but put in and set a waypoint at the landing then i allways put two more about 1200 feet apart so tha i know thats the ramp.
Anyway, after froggin 3-4 hrs we headed back and mike alday was leading me out. we had rode for what i thought enough to get back so i checked my gps and had just past the second and was almost to the first point so i backed out of it and next thing i saw was his running lights go straight up in the air. he had ran passed the ramp and ran out of water up the bank at the end of that canal.
After we found out he was ok we about died laughing. he wanted to know why my gps didn't warn us. i told him it dont detect lack of moisture.

Moral of the story; they are worth there weight in gold if you learn to use them and then use them.

I have the Garmin 330M handheld but it has the marine database in it and it shows all the water boundaries. Just too small a screen.

I live in N fl, I have tried a couple of things, Magellan, and Gamin included.
I always end up using my I way 500 Lawrence out of the truck because it names every turn, river bend and knee turn, also has every buoy and marker, just does not give any water depth ( it might be a liability issue) maybe in the future we might get some better charts on waterways but for the places I go The road map in 3d seems to be hard to beat. I have the latest Furuno NavNet gear in the 42 Bertram and it is the cats crapper, Wish the big boys would get the gear out for river rats..
also the lawrence has a big screen and is bright as hell, ( works great on the Harley too)
( just as an after thought I think most of Lawrence marine gear sucks)

Thanks,
Ive got a handheld, jusat not bright enough, and need a third hand. HArd to hold stik, Spot, gps, and beverage at the same time.
looking at several, but dang, they aint exactly given them away.

Consumer electronics are overpriced worser than jewelry. IN my lil Garmin 330M I seriously doubt there is more than $10 worth of parts in it. Chips are dirt cheep when mass produced, so is everything else in it.

Consumer electronics is the biggest rip off I can think of. 99% pure junk at a .Mil-Spec price. They make stuff work just enough to sell, sure dont make it to use for any length of time. Mine has been fixed 3 times in I guess 5 years maybe. Just flat make me mad as a wet hornet. For the prices they are charging for this stuff I would expect a 50 year lifespan and no failures. For GPS I would also expect maybe +/- 1 foot accuracy as well. I have seen GPS with less than 4" accuracy. Yup thats right 4". We used it in Seismic drill and shot point location. Works as GPS is advertised.

Im worser than a preacher when I get on this soapbox. I better shut up, er someone will wan't some of me. Its just the price -vs- quality that burns me up. Were being raped !

Isn't that the TRUTH. Just look at Bill Gates with the X-Box. I had to upgarde the hard drive in my sons so it would work. The hard drive that came with it would only read about half the games. Or even cell phones. My wife had hers replaced by Verizon 4-times because of a defect in the phone.

Whitebear you are so right. El-cheapo manufacture is the corporate way now.
They don't want to last too long then you'd never need another one.

heck Bear my GPS is accurate within 0.01' but the darn thing dosent have a map one in it. I have tried several on my boat and I have the best service from magellan both my hand held and fixed mount which I am putting back on this boat.

My topcon rtk gps is no help for navigation but it sure lets you know where you been. I monitor U.S. and RUSSIAN satellites typically have as many as 14 locked at one time. Gives me my world position is less tahn 2 seconds and updates every second. i could spring for the multiple updates per second but I don'r mind standin around for a few seconds.

Folks, get the GPS you are most comfortable using. My little Lowrance has been exposed to the weather 24 / 7 for close to 3 years now. It works perfectly still. It does not require any outside coupler or antenna and has never failed to lock onto a satelite group. It has a relatively small but easy to read screen, has a great built in map that is spookily accurate and has a bright purple crumb trail that provides "at a glance" "get home" assistance in the rain, fog or whatever. I'm sure I'd be in love with a Garmin or Magellan, too if that's what I was familliar with.

As we get more involved with airboat exclusion areas - Thanks SFWMD - it will be an asset to know EXACTLY where you are. 52.5 is going to become an important number for each of us.

I run the Garmin 2006c. Works beautifully. The new 3206c replaced it. My unit can be found on ebay now. Charles

I've got the Garmin 276C and it works for lakes, the gulf and roads. I just change the chip in it which I got off ebay.
Tha best place to find GPS and mounts is here. They are about the cheaps around and have great customer service.

http://www.gpscity.com/

Got my mount and Garmin 276c from them.

Just my 2 cents
