Really appreciate all the info just went to west marine and checked out the map76 garmin looks like that's the one , (wish it was a little simpler to use ) I guess that will come after reading the manual 100 times gonna see if I can find one on ebay before I shell out 200 bucks

Its not hard to use. I thought the same thing when I bought mine. After 10 minutes with it, you will be a pro.

Ok, I just took mine for a walk with the 100' tapemeasurer. The smallest change I can see is about 20-30'. I walked it and then measured it several times and it all falls in this window. Were I running a boat with the track laid in there is no way I could run and see this tiny amount of change though. remember its a handheld not a big 10x10" display.

This is about what I remembered from the last few years in the Mid East. I use it but have little confidence in it. It isnt accurate enough for me to drive with using the nav feature, Id be missing turns or in folks yard. It is good enough to get ya un-lost though.

How old and what kind is it? Some have setting both for resolution (zoom) and for how fast or far it needs to see a difference to register a difference. I have a Lowrance for flying that I can set to a low accuracy, ie, it only "samples" the satellites every several seconds so not nearly as accurate as it can be, but, makes batteries last a lot longer. Also, on the lower sample rate settings it won't register motion (although it will eventually show a difference in position) unless you're moving over something like 10 mph.

Scotty, I also have a higher end Garmin Streetpilot for my Jeep that will show where to turn right down to a gnat's butt. It's even pretty accurate in altitude (+/- about 30 ft) which is the hardest thing for a gps to figure out.

M ine is the Magellan Map 330M (Marine). It has a tiny 2" wide by about 3' tall display. I have never seen a sample rate adjustmant in it. I have had it maybe 5 years, at that time it was a $400+ unit. It is WAAS enabled and will see 12 Sats, but I doubt it can use more than 4 of them at a time. I can zoom in with the screen but at max zoom it leaves a LOT to be desired.

I just isnt even good enough to use even for geocaching games unless the cache is well marked.

If I could hook it up to the laptop with the serial cable and run the Nav mode at max zoom I might be able to actually realtime navigate with it on the 15x15" display.

Sire wish it had a CDI display like a VOR does. Not sure it would cut it even then though. As it is it certainly wont keep me in my lane driving down the road. As I said I THINK in my post on the OTHER thread on GPS, it certainly is good enough to get ya unlost though :)

if you use a GPS that has turn by turn enabled it uses a correction based on algorithims. Like my TOMTOM if I was within 15-30 feet of a road traveling in a direction of that road it would move me on the screen to be within that road. Once you got outside these limits IE traveling steadily in a direction that wasn't exactly parrallel it would finally let the cursor move to correct the location. The real problem with turn by turn GPS's isn't the accuracy of the GPS itself its the inaccuracy of the maps they use.
And nothing against magellan I have used a few of their units before but they are IMO not the best. And back to the same thing a handheld is usually smaller then a standalone antenna used for a boat. So imagine the size of the antenna in that little 2" x 2" area above the screen.
here is a good explanation of WAAS though. Given semi ideal conditions you should be getting accuracy to within 10' if not it maybe the unit.

dont yall know that being lost is part of the fun ,the only way you ever learn where your at is to look around , and dont ask for directions its a sign of weakness :D

Ya aint lost if it dont matter where ya are !

It may just be time to dump this little thing and get the one4 I planned on for a while now. One of the Garmin rigid mounted units and a larger display and a bigger antenna. But then it has to ride in the car or in the boat. Maybe Ill add that one and keep what I got for walkin around and doing geocaching.

whitebear check out lowrances new model. Its the only one designed to be in a car and in a boat and totally waterproof. Its also the first one to use satellite imagery in large cities. It's pretty trick

EDIT - I also add one of the shop at home places on the internet was offering this unit on easy pay (4 5 or 6 payments interest free). I can't remember which one it was but it might be worth looking into. Check shopathome, shopnbc or qvc I think it was one of those.

EDIT #2- forgot to point this out about this unit. if I remember right that iway600c didn't have an internal speaker but used a speaker off the battery cable which I didn't like and I think that particular version doesn't have bluetooth either. I actually ordered it then read further and cancled the order because of the lack of bluetooth.

I use the lowrance iWAY, I think its the best out, screen is big enough to see, The map is as good or better than what i have seen on any Garmin. I wish the unit had its own battery. I use it in the car, boat and Harley. Nice to have all the music storage.

Wow, thats one hot unit, Ill be back Saturday I may just order that. It looks like it has decent mapping. Does it have a NAV feature where ya get a compass rose to a waypoint with a pointer showing where you are going?

Scotty

I have 0 time on that unit to answer. When my truck got broke into and my tomtom ripped off I started shopping around for a replacement. So all I know is whats in the print and reviews.

Crabby It all depends on how and ware you are going to use your GPS. as to what you need. But remember they can and do fail so keep you old compos and maps handy and know ware you are. I have found that http://www.gps discount is one of the best places I have bought them... we like the GARMIN epically the hand held Rino. if you can get the 350 Rino the added features are worth the extra cost. and on the airboat we have abused the Garmin 176 maper for several years but it only shows the black and white maps so we just up graded to the Garmin 276 color mapper and WOW that shows you 100 times more info on the waterways maps. Good luck and have fun.
