GPU 220 (FIX IT OR SCRAP IT?)

1ST BOAT IVE OWNED, HAS A 220 GPU. IT LASTED ABOUT 50 HRS, THEN TWO JUGS WENT BAD. I'VE HEARD ALOT OF NEGATIVE FEED BACK ABOUT 220'S. TRYING TO DECIDE IF IT IS EVEN WORTH FIXING THIS MOTOR OR SWITCHING TO SOMETH9ING ELSE. SAD DEAL, 6,000 INVESTED IN BOAT, MINUS PROP. CATCH 22.

GPU are usually great motors for an airboat. If all you is jug replacement your probably looking at around $250 a cly.If you want to spend a little money you can convert to a 520 cyl and get quite a bit more HP.

I'd keep it if it's just jug replacement. Like Skeeter said it's fairly cheap to replace them compared to swapping motors.

don't hear many negative comments about them , if it isn't shattered in little parts I would say fix it and you may is well at least do a 470 conversation and i would go to a 520 conversation

The only negative I've had with my 220 GPU is the cylinders. A lot of the engines were rebuilt for the military and had little run time. They sat for years and the cylinder walls are full of rust. Tom Jeffords will get you a rebuilt chrome cylinder for $250 exchange and you'll be good to go for years. I put two rebuilt ones on my boat and I have two more coming.

I was so impressed with the power of the 220 GPU I bought a complete generator unit so I could have a spare engine for $750. It has rusty cylinders too. I'd get the new cylinders myself. I think it's a great low cost engine.

What happened to the cylinders? They are prone to be pitted from sitting, but otherwise
these are generally very dependable motors....fix the cylinders, if there are no other issues with the motor ....and happy airboating :)

The trick with any engine is don't patch it together, fix it right, put the bucks in it and they will run for years. The GPUs are one of the best deals in airboating because of the buildup possibilities and low initial cost.

If the bottom end is sound and standard I would build it up to something GTSIO. Theres several on the forum here and their owners love em.

THANKS GUYS. I GUESS I WAS TALKING TO THE WRONG FOLKS. UP TILL NOW ONLY ONE PERSON I KNOW WAS CONFIDENT IN 220'S. I WILL FIX HER UP.

NO. 1 PISTON MELTED WHERE THE PLUG FIRES. CAUSED A GAP BETWEEN THE PISTON HEAD AND RINGS ALMOST BIG ENOUGH TO STICK MY PINKY THROUGH. I WAS TOLD THAT I MIGHT HAVE HAD AN INTAKE LEAK THERE. THE OTHER, NO. 4, HAD ITS VALVE SEAT POP OUT CROOKED. AND ANOTHER SLEEVE JUST HAD A PRETTY ROUGH SURFACE. I SUPPOSE I'LL RELINE AND RING ALL SIX. MY BUDDY HAS A SPARE PISTON. THANKS SUM MO.

I live in palm bay,if you need a hand changing the cyls let me know. Don`t mind helping out a fellow airboater
