How does one obtain a GPU engine. I see them for sell thru classifieds from individuals, but where do they get them. I'm looking for the auction site that sells these. Not that I'm trying to undercut anyone trying to make a buck. but I'm trying to budget my next airboat project.

Military surplus,
http://www.drms.dla.mil/

Let us know , how it goes.

There probably a ton of "BS" you have to go through to get into the system.
When I was in the navy, I would just go down to one of the yards and walk through. If i found something for the ship or my unit I would go back and have the supply officer type up the paper work and go back the next day and pick the stuff up for free. Hell sometime 5 or 6 of us would go and bring trucks load of good stuff back.

Good Luck.

I've been looking thru DMRO sales but it's time consuming. eventually DMRO sales will go away and the surplus will go thru PCARS and be sold at the discretion of the property administrator at the location where the item is. It may take some time but I'll figure it out. This board has so many members, I'm sure someone has already been there done that and could shed some light.

I'd be surprised to see the military had any at all. They were given to the Air Guard units but have been replaced by diesels. You might check scrap yards that are near military installations and see if they have any MD-3 units. I was so impressed with the 220 GPU I got on my last airboat I bought the remnants of an MD3 last year for $750. It had been overhauled and had less than 30 hours run time. The cylinders were all pitted and the cam had to be overhauled as well as the lifters and cam followers. Mine was freshly overhauled in 1989 and sat since. Be ready to spend some bucks to get it up to speed.

I bought a bunch of MD-3 packages in Lodi, california about 7 or 8 years ago. Sold all these packages to Mac Hazelton in Valdosta, Georgia. I sold these packages for 1200 a piece I think. Pretty hot commodity I guess??

I think Mack spent most his time investigating this exact thing.

If you start with a standard MD3 with a standard crank you can plan on spending $145 for the cam, $500 for the lifters and cam followers, $250 for rebuilt cylinders each or $1500, gasket set $135 and $45 for a crankshaft seal. If the crank needs to be polished and inspected plus re-nitrated that will be less than $500. Bearings should be less than $400. Shouldn't need much more if you do the work yourself. Of course you need the overhaul manual to get the specifications. If you get the engine for free you should still plan on spending about $3000 to get it right. All in all it is still a cheap and dependable engine.
