Federal funds go toward airboat for use in shallow water

MANATEE - Port Manatee will be adding an airboat to its security arsenal, thanks to a U.S. Department of Homeland Security grant announced Monday.
The grant for $37,890 will go toward paying for the security vessel, which will be able to navigate shallow waters where current port vessels can't go, said Port Manatee spokesman Steve Hollister.
"We have an area between Berth 12 and Manbirtee Key that is too shallow at low tide for existing port vessels to enter," Hollister said.
The airboat was the only item approved from a list of five security items for which Port Manatee sought funding, Hollister said....
