Had my first motor problem... 0470 GPU

The other night I wanted to take my brother riding, moon was out and it looked like a good night to ride... besides, my brother had never been on an airboat and this was going to be his first time.

Well, I started the motor up while still at the house just to make sure all was well. I noticed that it was ideling high so I got to looking and DAMN... the carb had fuel running out of it from the " air intake".

The carb is what I believe to be the original Zenith type set up. To date, it has been realiable... what a bummer and total let down. I could not get it to stop leaking and flooding out so we never made it out.

I have already taken the boat to have it worked on and no good news was had. Seems the carb has some type of leak that can't be found and I have to get a replacement.

I have heard of getting a Holly set up and after Christmas, I guess that's what I will do. I have also heard that the motor will run better with a different carb set up.

Stick with the zenith it is the best carb for that motor. Somebody should have a kit to rebuild it. It is a real simple job to do.

I had a 220 boat that I sold and bought a carb from Gary Barber for about 100 bucks to the door. Ran good. But from what I have heard the only way to go is the holly. I do not know from experience just what I have heard.

If you have a chance to convert to Holley, that would be the way to go.You will love the change.I went with a 500 Holley 2 bbl.Been there done that.If you still have the solenoids on top try taking them out and replacing with plugs this mignt help. That's my 2 cents.

FWIW, I don't know anybody around here with a GPU that doesn't have a Holley. 2 bbl 500 seems to be the norm, and I guess they work fine.

The engine doesn't give a hang what kind of carb it has, or even if it has a carb for that matter. As long as it gets as much of the correct mixture as it wants it is happy.

I still say your problem sounds like needle and seat. You may even find it just has trash/varnish between the two that is holding them open. It does't take a big piece of trash to hang them open, and then there is nothing to keep the fuel pump from forcing a constant flow of fuel into [and out of] the float bowl.

IDK anything about a Zenith, but you might try spraying in all the orifices with some B12 Chemtool. It is the most potent carb cleaner I have found. You can get it at NAPA under part number 0117C

After you spray it all out good, tap lightly around the body of the carb with a plastic screwdriver handle or similar to help dislodge the gunk.

You may have to repeat this process a couple times, but give it a shot, can't hurt

Decided to go with the Holly 500 carb set up. Picked up a new in the box Holly 500 for $228 out the door. Will let yall know how it turns out...

you will need to modify your intake.Let me know if you have a problem finding one,I may know where one is.
