Hammant Hulls

Call and ask Doug Hamant. 321-259-6998 They can build them light. They built an 11x7 ultralight for me. I think the hull only, weighs in around 100lbs.

Well my plan is to get Paul Dixon to build me a Twister but I am debating on whether to use the fiberglass hull he offers or find a really light aluminum for him to build on, b/c I am worried about tearing the glass up.

Aluminum will last longer.....fiberglass is easy to fix.....I've dented aluminum and cracked fiberglass and I'm still not sure which I really like better. What kind of area do you plan on running?

I grew up huntin a private lease in the Maurepas swamp near reserve and still hunt there. But I'm from Empire, lower plaqeumines parish, and Run Crewboats all throughout there, in venice, buras, empire, port sulphur, breton sound, delacroix, and reggio and hopedale, and ran tugs pushin deck barges doing rig-tending and never really saw a place that you really needed a airboat to hunt and be able to kill ducks. Now where i hunt in Maurepas its a different terrain, vedry heavy cypress laiden swamp. Airboats are great tools for hunting and there good as long as your the only person thats using them. Ducks dont roost in the open marsh if you got airboats runnin around. Take for example, if your familiar with plaquemines parish, they have the parish land set aside, which runs off of Baptiste Collete to Fort jackson, bout 18,000 acres just for parish residents to hunt on with a $200 yr pass. And everyone and there brother that owns a airboat in plaquemines hunts there and during the best weather your lucky if you can kill a duck. Now I hunt on Delta Wildlife Refuge, just outboards and pirogues allowed. No airboats or go-devils or mudboats. I limit out with my limit and whoever i hunt with and i'm headin back to venice when most of the other people are still headin to thier spots to go hunt. Its just a matter of how your willing to work to get what you want. Thats the problem with todays generation, my generation, everybody is lazy and wants the easiest way out and doesnt wanna put any effort in. Thats part of the reason why no body kills anything. My advice to you is invest in a nice outboard engine and boat or even a new godevil or go-devil surface drive. If you cant afford one, get with me and I can work you up a decent and fair price on a boat or a crawfish skiff, look on my profile, my big boat and my mini and my rotax boat that i'm selling are all homemade.

[/b]I'm a proud airboat owner, I'm 27 and practically grew up on an airboat. Still use them for the area that i hunt in which is totally different from where brlc la hunts. You'd have to be from here and see whats its like down where he hunts and where i hunt. I deer hunt only, half the problem why people complain there isn't any ducks is because you got some pricks with an airboat bowfishing all night long, from 8pm till 3am and its just ruining the hunting in the area, they have about 8-12 outfits that do it. And as I lisenced 200ton Master of Towing, towboat and crewboat operator, these people shouldn't be allowed to run boats or less alone be on the water. They have no regard for rules of the road and nav gen. Thats part of the reason why people aren't killing ducks down there. Half the people dont know it cause they dont live down there and just dont see it.

We do run a few go-devils at our lease. But when the tide is out your limited to where you can go with a go-devil even if it is a surface drive. When there is no water there is no path to use with outboards and go-devils. Now when the tide goes out there are pockets of water in the marsh and in certain curves in the bayous that gets trapped and thats what we hunt over. Granted I agree ducks and airboats dont mix well, but I assure you when there are ducks there are ducks and down where we are it all depends on the weather. We have run airboats down there going on at least 11 yrs that I know of and those were small ones limited to the bayous. I believe it was 6 yrs ago that the big boys came into play (a 454, 350, and an O-540) and yes they scare the ducks but we still kill our fair share of birds, and without airboats hunting in our lease would be damn near impossible. The marsh has changed tremedously in my 11 years down there and the lease has been in our hands since my dad was a young boy. I believe our group has been down there since the late 50's when hunting was nothing but put put 2hp outboards. The canals that were ran back then and my first few years have been filled in from andrew, lily, katrina, and rita. And yes my camp has survived through them all with a lil work and repair.

But back on subject, I have considered Go-Devil and Gator-Tail but I keep coming back to the fact that when the water is gone you just about can't hunt without and airboat. And I just wanna get a mini 35 HP and try it out down there.

Yes Maurepas compared to where I hunt is like comparing flooded timber to rice fields. There is a certain line that runs across south louisiana you can just visualize. Its like the timber just stops and its nothing but sawgrass for miles and miles.

Its in the Dulac area!!! That is about as specfic as I'm gonna get. Lets just say I'm only about a 10 minute ride into the Gulf from my camps front door.

Didn'twanna hear that, I'm workin right there in Cocoadrie, feel sorry for ya to be huntin in dulac, work with a bunch of fellow captains from ddown there and there all nuts. Mostly the Verdans. Everyone i talk to and I was down in that area durin all of huntin season runnin a crewboat, gray and white 65ft DELTA FLASH, didn't see a whole lot of ducks, but I hear ya, had those days with that bad east wind for 2 or 3 days pushin a 2-21/2 ft tide range. What about a mudboat with a ea82 subura ? That wouldn't suit you better, I see alot of people down there runnin them...

We are a lil deeper in the marsh for the subaru's. We range at about 3ft of water to mud flat in the lakes and ponds we hunt over. About the only deep water is in the main bayous that feed directly into the gulf. So when the wind shifts from the north or west the water is gone!!! And yes crew boat traffic is a little heavy at times but we are further into the marsh and doesn't affect us too terribly. And when we don't have ducks we find other stuff to do. Going to the camp isnt just I hope we get thousands of ducks its going to the camp to have a good time. In my opinion it is one of the better spots in the state and one of the most consistent about having ducks. I hear about guys that go hunting and dont see a thing and people that hunt areas where the ducks are there then completely move on. I have killed every hunt and every trip in my 11 years down there. It has its times where we limit both days and then where we shoot a few in the morning and a few more in the evening. We have around 3,000 acres in our lease and a lot of water and the ducks move around a lot and its hard to follow sometimes and airboats help to get into the pockets that are in the middle of the marsh. There has been trips down there that we have had 20 people go home with a full bag limit after the weekend. We may not consistently shoot limits but we definately consistently kill. We all hope the rabbits down there make a come back but unfortunately if they come back the nutria do too. Every year down there something has changed and it is constantly changing through the season. As long as the marsh is still there I'll be in the blind.

I mean if the rabbits make there come back the nutria are likely to return too. No I dont want nutria back. The marsh is rebuilding and I dont want them back eating every bit of grass. We are starting to get some small shrubs and trees regrowing which is something we haven't had for a few years.

I know that ya'll have the bowfishers down there where your huntin, cause i sank one of them one night. Thats another reason why duck huntin is startin to go bad, There suppose to have a vote coming in the beginning of the year to ban bowfishing, cause of the damage its doing to the terarrain and the damage its causeing towards the redfish population, It will help us all if they make it illegal. Which side of Bayou Dulac are ya'll huntin on ?
